Living in Kyoto - 07-22-2008, 01:44 PM

Hello, I'm about to do a student exchange in Kyoto through my University in London. They don't offer a lot of help in finding accommodation. Does anybody have any suggestions about places to stay - the best parts of town to stay in - how much I can expect to pay - are the apartments furnished, unfurnished, etc? Thank you for your help!

We may be able to tell you more if you can tell us which university are you going to. There could be something in the area for a cheap price, which can help you save on transportation

To be honest, I would be suspicious of any exchange program that doesn't help you with housing. It is almost impossible for a Japanese college student to rent an apartment, much less a foreigner.

Smile More info on exchange - 07-22-2008, 08:03 PM

Hi

I am also going on the exchange with MA09 and one other person. It is an exchange that has been running for many years between our University and Kyoto City University of the Arts.

I have been told that the University is quite far out of Kyoto and that the University used to offer accommodation, but has since stopped as most people prefer to live in the city. We would also prefer to live in Kyoto as we need to be based in the city for the projects we are completing whilst in Japan.

Any more advice would be gratefully received.

Many thanks!

So you are just going to land in Japan with no place to live? I am a little confused. Renting an apartment is a very expensive affair, you are often paying several months rent just as a down-payment (which you will not get back).

You would definitely benefit from some accommodation arranged by the university. Renting on your own in Kyoto will take time, considerable cash, and Japanese language skills.
