Re-entry permit - 08-08-2009, 06:39 PM

Hi, everyone. I'm a long time reader, but a first time poster. I've searched this forum for some info regarding re-entry permits, but could not find an answer to my specific issue. I hope someone here can help me

Here's my situation. I have been approved for a specified visa, which requires me to enter Japan within 3 months from the date the visa was issued. At the time I applied for the visa I had every intention of moving to Japan within the 3 month period, but circumstances will not allow me to do so at the present time. I was thinking of entering Japan, apply for a multiple re-entry permit right away, and return to the States. However, I learned that I need an Alien Registration Card in order to get my re-entry permit, which may take up to 2 weeks. Some have suggested that after applying for the ARC, I can request a temporary copy which is suffient to obtain a multiple re-entry permit. Is this true? Did anyone here get a re-entry permit with just the temporary ARC?

Thanks for reading my post. Any input is greatly appreciated

I don't remember if I was asked for my alien registration card the last time I got a reentry permit. All I remember is that it took about 10 minutes at the Shinagawa immigration office and cost 6000 yen. Getting the alien registration card is not so easy because you need an address to link it to, as well as the address of the employer. The address you use will be verified, the ward office keeps a map of the area, and has the name of each resident listed at every address. You can ask for a receipt from the ward office showing that your ARC card is in-process, and that should be enough for a reentry permit. On the other hand, bureaucracies in Japan are unpredictable, and you may or may not be approved depending on how whimsical the agent who handles your paperwork is.

Would it be a problem to just let your visa lapse and reapply for it when you are actually ready to move?

The Japanese are aware of how stringent they are about letting people enter the country. Therefore, they assume that you have your residence card as you can be deported if you don't get it within those 90 days of touching down. They shouldn't refuse you if you have a legit visa.

Still, Sangetsu has a good point above.

I did this last week, and they definitely said that both an actual ARC and the Passport was required. Since I had both, no problem. I didn't have reason to ask, of course, if there was a way to do it without an ARC, I don't know what you can do in your situation.

Thanks everyone for reading my post. I actually considered letting my visa lapse, but didn't want to go through the hassle of applying for the visa again. Actually, I didn't want my family in Japan to go through the hassle of getting the necessary paperwork (i.e. koseki tohon, juminhyo) to reapply for the visa.

I'll be able to link my ARC info to my uncle's house so that shouldn't be a problem. I have a Child of a Japanese National visa, so hopefully, I won't need to list an employer on the application (at least for my initial application).

I guess I should wait 2 weeks to get my ARC and have a little fun in Japan while I'm there. I'm in need of a vacation anyways

I like the fact that you get a whole year to re-enter. At least, that was the case. I still have an unused, though expired, permit in my passport.

Actually, your re-entry permit is good for the life of your visa. If you have a one year visa, it is good for one year, if you have a three year visa, it will be good for three years. If they ever get around to passing the five year version in the diet, then I presume a multiple re-entry permit would be good for five years. If you get permanent residency, I think you have altogether different paperwork.
