My plan was to take the cat back with me to my home country once my study abroad was over. At the time, I really thought I was a suitable- and responsible- person that had the ability to take care of this kitten. I planned everything out: I spend hours online researching how to keep my pet happy; the vaccinations I needed to give it to keep it healthy; and the entire pet immigration process for my eventual return back to my home. However, as I started to take care of it, I learned more about myself than I wish I would have and made me face some of the worst aspects in me that I never knew existed. I will not shun nor will I try to reason my way out of me being the bad guy- I accept full responsibility for my actions. However, what I can't take is the heartache that is coming with taking care of this kitten. I love this kitten to death, I want to give it the best it can get. That's where this pain is coming from- I just cannot see how I can give this kitten what it deserves in my current state, and I constantly bash myself for not thinking that this was going to happen. I was arrogant in thinking that I could juggle taking care of this animal that requires attention and much love along with the intensive amount of studying I need to be doing.

This pain is becoming so bad that I am starting to lose sleep over it. All I want at this point is for this kitten to have someone better than me. God, I feel horrible.

There is really no way to save face on this one, so the best thing to do is return it to the original owner ASAP so they can find a better home for it. If you have gotten vaccinations for the cat, include those papers, and maybe a gift.

You screwed up, and now you have to get really humble.

It's not a cultural thing. Just a lack of planning on your part. Contact the original owner immediately and tell him the truth and ask him what he would like you to do: give the kitten back to him, find a home for it, take it to Animal Control Center...

Give the original owner a chance to decide what he would like to see done. Things happen to everyone, it's the follow thru that's important.

It is bad manners - but worse than bad manners, it`s extremely irresponsible. There are countless reasons you should not have agreed to caring for the kitten - you`re the one at fault and no matter what happens, you will be (and SHOULD be) thought of badly for it.

Cats can live for 20+ years. Even if you`d not been busy with studying and wanting to travel - you`re still pretty unlikely to be able to stay in Japan for 20 years straight from now. What did you plan to do with the cat when you left Japan? Toss it? Cats aren`t all that easy to find homes for, especially once they`ve grown past the cute kitten stage.

If you didn`t bother to think past "Aww, cute!" and have a little responsibility, you fully deserve to have everyone think you`re an awful person.

sorry Nyrorin I think you are way over the top in saying that Miseri is an awful person. haven't you ever made mistakes in your life? I certainly Have.

Miseri must have acted with His/her heart rather than thinking things through properly. No doubt this will be a lesson he or she will not forget. She/he will not be the only person on earth who has done this kind of thing-- without thinking it through-- and surely it was up to the previous owner to have asked the right questions at the time.

so all the blame should not go onto Miseri although I too was very harsh but sorry I think you are also very harsh in saying he/she is a horrible person. thoughtless mAYBE-- BUT AWFUL== no!

Unfortunately many many people take on an animal when they should not.

Maybe YOU could advise where to go if the original owner cannot take the kitten back, as you LIVE in Japan.

I have no idea if there are thousands of feral cats in Japan? 0r what facilities there are for caring for cats and ensuring they are neutered etc.

In this country "UK" we have too many dogs and cats in rescue homes.

It is very common-- too many people take on an animal-- that later they get rid of for various reasons.
are there many stray dogs in Japan?

So lets hope a good permanent home will be found for this kitten.

Please please stop feeling so bad about yourself. In many ways maybe you could actually keep the kitten. I am uncertain why you find it too much to cope with--.

You obviously needed something to love whilst living in a different country.

You can get things for the kitten to play with surely? something to keep it happy whilst you are studying.

I recently bought a puppy for my eighteen year old gr daughter. so many years she has been desperate to have a dog-- Now at long last she can--with the help of the rest of her family and friends who can take care of it. If she was on her own then I'm afraid it would not have been possible-- but she is lucky to have many friends and family who all love the new puppy.

cats are not so reliant on humans as dogs are. Have you spoken to your family about it?

If you can discipline yourself to study for so long, then relax with the kitten. I suspect that your study is getting too much for you-- but you need to take time out anyway--

Cats can get used to routines after all.

think over the long term. good luck, Babs.

Yeah you're not a bad person.

Just made a mistake.

But it doesn't mean you have to give it back.

I mean couldn't you just get a friend to look after it while you travel?

If you feel like you cannot handle the kitten, instead of returning it to the previous owner maybe you can ask around some friends and if none of them are intrested I'm sure they would have friends that might be

I grew up with dogs. But last year mine died of natural causes after 13 years.

And I love animals but I didn't want to get another dog because I felt as if I was replacing her. So I got 2 baby cats (for the first time in my life ) instead last March.

And compared to dogs, cats are easy to take care, I can't really understand the problem. You only have to teach them where to go to the bathroom, and that is easy, because they always do their things after eating. On your free time play with them, or get them toys to play when you are busy.

Now, after half a year they come and go as they please. Sometimes they will leave for a whole month and then return and stay here. They don't cause problems, and when I'm with them I just sit to watch the tv while they sleep on my lap.

But anyway, if you can't take care of them I recommend that you find someone who can as soon as possible while they are still little.

Maybe go to downtown with the cat and wait for the people who are interested get near you and ask you about the cat!.

I really dislike pets, because I know of the expense & care they require, & I'm not really an animal person. In answer to your question, I'd return it, but be very humble & polite. Say your deeply sorry for wasting this person's time, & you should've thought more of the consequences or downside to pet ownership. Be also, be honest
