Yeah, a lot of the "grandparent" age people are like 4 foot nothing , but as I walk through crowds of businessmen during my morning commute I'd say the average guy is AT LEAST my height (5'8"-5'9"), and a lot guys who are taller than that.
As JohnBraden said, you'll probably be able to see over most people but you're not going to be some kind of giant. My photos from Japan and around the world: http://www.flickr.com/dylanwphotography |

im 6.3 and in my group is 1.62m tall girl. she went to japan and said she was an average height. and i don't feel like giant next to her.
+ diet in Japan has changed and there is a lot more meet than there used to be so people are getting bigger. for sure tall. but not like Mike Myers giant kind. + today we were joined by a japanese girl at lunch who is in an exchange for russian language here and she was taller than her. like an average girl. |

I agree with this also. I am 5'9 and a good chunk of the dudes my age or younger are my height or taller. It is just the older generation and girls that I tend to tower over, but still there are quite a few J-girls even that got me beat.
It is kind of funny that Japanese people who am taller than look at me and say I am tall (but they are just thinking foreigner = tall, when in reality I am not that tall at all comparatively anymore). |

Compared to women, I am tall, but if I were a guy, probably not so much. I'm about 5'9 or 5'10, and I do tower the women. I work in a junior high school, and a good amount (imo) of the boys there are close to my height, my height, or on the verge of being slightly taller since they're still kids and probably still growing. So, with your height, I don't think it'd be any kind of a problem.
