But looking through this whole thread, and the debate that was laced into it, I actually learned something so I can prepare myself for when I do end up going to Japan...

I still don't know if sexism is worse on Japan or not.But I guess it's not much different of the stupid rest of the world.

As a male I can't really say about sexism, but I have encountered racism quite a few times... most Japanese are fine with Gaijins (or just hide their true feelings), but a lot really don't like us and I have heard many things muttered behind my back and even when people are sat next to me on a train (obviously from people who don't realise I speak quite a lot of japanese)

Okay...I've been to Japan, and a lot of what you guys are saying is over-exaggerated. They love foreiners and try to talk to them as much as possibe to work on their English. Females are respected, there are even women-only cars on the trains during rush-hour time to prevent groping.

It isn't a problem in Tokyo, but once you get outside of there, it definately seems to become a little less-appreciative. Most people are fine (or, as I mentioned before, they hide it well), but racism definately exists

I think the Japanese are becoming different in time. I mean the older generation don't speak English, but alot of the younger ones do.

And there diet is changing alot too. More than likely in time they'll become less on morals, religion and following a strict life style.

I could be wrong though.

I think the original poster in this thread has Japan mixed up with China. All I hear about Japan, is that the Japanese really admire foreigners. I'm always hearing good things about Japan's safety issues too. I heard that it is one of the safest countries to live in. Of course, these are things that I have heard, so nothing I am saying is definite, but I believe them.

I have never heard of women being treated differently either. I here about that happening in China, but not in Japan. The way I see things in videos etc., is that females are treated very well in Japan, especially foreigners.

I will be going to Japan within the next couple of years hopefully. I hope to live there eventually, but I think a gradual introduction into their culture would be best.

China is really good to both foreigners and women especially if you live near Beijing since they have the Olympics coming (holy shnikees I just realized that it is next year) so they don't want any international incidents.

If you are speaking of treatment of its own citizens, maybe that would be a different scenario but for the most part women are very well respected.

I would have to disagree... most Japanese actually go out of their way to not sit next to a gaijin on the bus or train (some would even stand if there are no other seats). Maybe they are shy, maybe they are racist... I don't know but I CAN tell you it has happened to me every single day that I have been here so far

I think a lot of them are more comfortable sitting next to foreign women than devilishly handsome young men likes me-self;) . Unless said Japanese person happens to be an interested young woman, then I find them sitting opposite of me, standing nearby or sitting next to me. Of course this is all true mostly closer to Tokyo and Maebashi, in the trains closer to home we all have plenty of space minus the two times in the day high schoolers are going and coming from school.
