This thread:
Let's Japan.org :: View topic - The End of Nova Thread is making me more and more nervous about how stable my job .. or if I will even have a job come September when I leave. I mean I already bought my ticket.. I've been approved for a Visa from the embassy.. so even if Nova goes down in flames, I'll still be going.. it will just be much, much harder. |

I just finished reading that thread. It certainly doesn't paint a pretty picture. If you're looking for a way out now, you may want to do it now. Eikaiwa jobs are available throughout the year, but if it is true that Nova closes its doors unexpectedly you will not be able to compete with experienced teachers. For once I am glad to be a low earning, lazy ALT. At least I have job security.

Hey there -
I am planning on working for Nova too. My visa paperwork is still being processed but I still hope to leave end of September/early October. But, reading all these threads about Nova is making me really nervous. Will I even have a job then??? |

I've worked for NOVA
It has a bad reputation but it's not all bad! Good Points It's a piss easy job where you get paid a fair amount. You never have to teach more than 4 students in a regular class The work can be quite varied depending what training you receive You don't have to work long hours (like the rest of Japanese companies) You get paid to talk English Depending on your boss, it can be really relaxed Most of the people you will meet are nice You can take a lot of holidays a year Bad Points Your pay will never significantly increase You do not get paid for sick days (because too many people take the piss) There is such I high turnover that it seems that NOVA doesn't care about it's teachers. (Yet again, this is a typical Japanese thing, the worker is not cared for just the profit) The are zero benefits (you can never go home early, never get a christmas bonus from the company or a ham or anything) Telling people you are an English teacher isn't as cool as telling them you are a doctor. You don't get national holidays off Depending on how long you want to stay in Japan then NOVA either is or isn't for you. It is definately not something to be avoided. Try it out, you might love it like I did or hate it! But if you don't try you'll never know! I'm in the process of looking for a real Job in Japan now. One not teaching English!!!! |

Oh, and don't worry about NOVA being trouble. Financially they are nowhere near as strong as they used to be and their stock has fallen A LOT but they are still making more money than the other big eikaiwas & they seem to be hiring more & more people.
There were reports that the Japanese staff didn't get paid this month but the pay was a couple of days late due to the banks being closed on pay day & human fuck up of not paying them the day before the banks closed like usual. All the foreign workers got paid on time. The Japanese media has jumped on the NOVA bashing bandwagon & one newspaper even reported that NOVA had ceased operations (not true but unfortunately your average Japanese person believes whatever they are told) |

They were a day late paying the month before, and they were *5* days late paying last month. When a company starts having trouble paying salaries...it don't look good.
Their stock is a *quater* of what it was before. Generally the voucher system eikaiwas have really fallen out of favour, people are starting to realise that you pay this huge money up front, and you never use your vouchers in the time limit. They are still hiring and shipping in teachers because the current teachers are quitting left right and center. But getting a visa from them, I wouldn't worry, they need the new people to come in. It doesn't seem likely that Nova's about to close it's doors tommorow, or maybe next month. But it's days as one of the big 4 look limited. |
