Teenage pregnancy is VERY common in Japan. It took the Japanese government over 20 years to approve the use of birth-control pills, and only a few months to approve Viagra (guess who runs the show!). KAT-TUN singer and uber-popular star Jin Akanishi's mom was 15 years old when she had him. I know more women who had "dekichatta kekkon" than not (that means they got married to thier boyfriend because they got pregnant). Abortions are getting easier to get, but are still a difficult thing and are very shameful.
These situations are more common out of the major cities, where there is more to do. Girls aren't taught to "save themselves" for marriage, so there are a lot of young moms in Japan. |
I'm afraid teen pregnancy is big in the UK, because I know a girl who went my high school is 19 now and had a baby girl this year.
I feel happy for her, but she's posted on myspace the pics of her when she was pregnant, when she was about to give birth and after she had the baby...really werid.. |

In 2002 the teen birth rate for Japan was 0.4% as compared to 4.2% in the US.
Global incidence of teenage pregnancy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia However, to the claim that the Japanese get extensive sex education- I haven't found any evidence for this. From what I've heard, it's the opposite. |
