Because I live in Tokyo. And I am willing to help out. If you are here to troll me, then go away. But, if you are here to really find an answer, then I dont mind helping or calling around in Tokyo to find the answer. Can you clarify what a visum is?

I am not. But I was raised in Kyoto and went to international school. I would never go, nor will i ever send my children to a Japanese school. 99% of all gijin here send their kids to Inter. Schools or British/American schools. I personally as an American will send my kid to a British school.

ok, cool. But what about University level? do you know anything about student life there? cos im going to an exchange in Tokyo (had kyoto as my other choice), and to be honest. i don't know what to expect. here in france/england uni life is kinda laid back... i usualy have 1 year holiday and study just for one month before exams and i still manage to fly by... is that possible in japan? cos i'd rather be visiting sites and doing things rather than staying in lectures all day

This depends yeah.... If you go to Sophia or Temple then you will have a great time. If you are at Toudai or Gakushuin then be prepaired to study your ass off. Do you have a University in mind?

Yeah i've got into Tokyo and kyoto univeristy (best 2 in japan) already. My problem is, these two are ranked best two in japan, but i don't know what kind of ranking. I don't know if it was based purely on Masters/doctorats.
Do you know anything about these uni's?... well Tokyo one. cos i'm leaning more towards tokyo now

Tsuzuki 10-25-2007 05:23 PM

are you often here at JF ? I think I have more questions later ^^,

Toudai and Kyodai are from the same keiretsu. Same school almost. Toudai is rated the best in Japan. But it also depends on what you study. If your an IT guy, you should lean towards Keio Univ. If you are into Japanese law, Toudai would be it. If it is a Med practice.... well.... put it this way. Everytime i needed surgrey on my knee from sports, I would fly to America. I would never do it in japan. :mtongue:

i got an exchange agreement for Math and/or physics Final year of "bachelors" equivalent.

You sound surprised??

MMM 10-25-2007 10:13 PM

Well, I was wondering how you got in. That would be like being accepted at Harvard and Yale. I wouldn't think a non-native speaker would even have a chance going through the application process.

noodle 10-25-2007 10:21 PM

oh yeah, you're right. with a normal application i wouldn't stand a chance without an advanced knowledge of the japanese language. but i'm only doing an exchange... the university i'm in now has an agreement with tokyo and kyoto among other universities.

But my prof did say that the only reason they accepted me is cos of my results and the fact that i speak different languages. (dunno how that interests them, but i'm not gonna complain)

i'm afraid you've confused me a little... i haven't heard of Toudai, kyodai, keiretsu etc. anymore info on this? (a link maybe)
Also, i'm going to do math and/or physics... your thoughts on that?

Kyodai = University ok Kyoto

Keiretsu = a Family of companies.

You should know this if you plan on coming here.

Tokyo/Kyoto University would be the same as say... University of Washington. There are many of these students who go abroad to learn at say Oxford, MIT, Yale, Harvard and end up dropping because the classes are to advanced. They are the best for Japan and Japan only. Even then, my wife graduated from Gakushuin with her law degree with a 2 year study at Yale. She walks all over her fellow Tokyo Univ. lawyers.

Oh, no doubt in the world. But the admissions process and reputation is more what I meant. Many Japanese study their asses off to get into a University, only to party for four years. In Japan, the hard part is getting in. In the US, the hard part is graduation (to make a sweeping generalization).

TsukinoHana 10-26-2007 02:03 AM

i was wondering does japan have an international cosmetology school for anyone who wants to learn?

RIGHT!!!! Aint that some shit lol. Japanese kids go through all that crap and some hang themselves just to party in Univ. Hence the rapid decline in the Japanese economy.

That you would pretty much need to be fluent in Japanese.

There are plenty of beauty schools, but I have never heard of an international one...

Well, it's always been that way, but it goes to show you that your pedigree and your actual skills have nothing to do with each other.

I have worked for too many Japanese bosses, and pretty much the only thing they look for in an application is where you went to school and what level of degree you have.

It's funny to imagine, but it's even worse in Korea. Now all these Korean politicians and famous people are getting caught lying on their resume's saying they graduated from NYU and famous universities when they only went to a community college in the same city.

i know these sites well, but i didn't know they were called as you mentioned above. I'm guessing thats how you say it in japanese?

MMM, i think what you mentioned is the same all over the world these days. For example, my brother went to Imperial college (3rd overall in uk, and 1st for some subjects), now he's a financial banker, but he told me when they recruit people in these BIG companies, they only look at the UNI, and the qualification level, not even the subject. He told me what you learn in school/uni etc is almost ALWAYS useless you do research or if its a subject destined for one job only./ The only reason people employ uni gradutes is cos it shows companies that they are able to get through tough exams. have deadlines, they can organise themselves etc etc

noodle 10-26-2007 08:40 AM

forgot to mention.it's the same in france. if you go to a TOP uni like marie cure etc or a "grande ecole"=engineering school. you can do any subjuct you wanta nd get a great job with nothing to do with the subject.

I think this is great for me because i don't have any real ideas for a future career, so all i'm doing is getting my grades and going to the top/near top uni's

noodle 10-27-2007 09:08 AM

got a question for you ferrari. where you work (bank), from which uni's/countries do you employ the most from

Honestly, most banks here go from headhunters. If you are looking at a japnese bank then I am not sure. If you come here with a degree, I can introduce you to some good people and you would come through them... Hays, Robert Walters, ect.

TheUnknown 10-28-2007 12:08 PM

just want to ask you this since you work in a banking environment. is there a high demand in Japan for accounting related jobs?.. and what about the pay?..

GhostBlade 10-28-2007 10:51 PM

I'm planning on coming to Tokyo during the summer of next year for a month. Which is the best month during the summer? I believe in June it rains and in July and August it's humid.

If you plan on working in Japan, research the market and see if you fit. if you want to be an accountant, well, i am not sure what industry you want to work in. If it is finace, then see my answers above. If you want to be rich in japan, stay in finance. Major in something that will allow you to become a VP by 28. Get an MBA if you can. Most importaintly, learn japanese. 日本語話せないと仕事できないよ。
