Do you know what the OP means when he say Otaku?
We are not speaking Latin here.
Not all words have the same weight for everyone
for example puke in english is something you wont touch
but puke in my language is something males want to touch or even lick:mtongue:

correct me if im wrong
for japanese otaku is degrading term for anime fans
for anyone else otaku = anime lover

LostSamurai89 01-13-2009 03:18 PM

Hey all lets leave out the negative vibes.:)

There are a lot of words that have different meanings in different languages. Unlike Otaku which is a loanword from the Japanese language taken by the Western culture.

Imagine that Anime and manga was created in the Western culture, not on Japan. And we use the word d*ckhead instead of Otaku to describe geeks and nerds who don't have a social life, and spend all the time reading manga and watching anime. So we only use the term d*ckhead as an insult. And as anime and manga come to Japan and it's the popularity rises, they take the word without bothering about it's meaning and simply use it to describe themselves as anime and manga fans as it's just an innoscent word to them. So while the westerners use the term carefully or only offend someone, in Japan every anime and manga fan calls himself a d*ckhead.
Now just imagine you're in anime convention somewhere in L.A and some Japanese comes to you saying I love anime very much. I'm a real d*ckhead and proud of it!
What else would think about him if not and idiot who doesn't know the true meaning of the word.

Quoted for truth.

Spin it any way you like it - the Japanese definition of "otaku" translates perfectly for anyone who chooses to call themselves that filthy word.
