We have a thread for first names, so why not one for surnames?

Not dissing my surname or anything but I have a really common Japanese surname (it sounds like a pun of something in English and so it was made fun of a lot).

My friend has a really cool surname, Torazawa. I'll add my list later.

I like mine Kobo.

I'll get my friend to sign up. Her's is Sato.

Isn't that like the officially, most common Japanese surname? I like it though.

Takanori, Matsumoto, Takahashi and Kai is nice surnames.

My two favorites are Yamamoto and Fukui because of the people I associate with the names and the way it feels to say them.

My favorite would be Morita. I had a co-worker with that last name & its the name of my favorite character on Honey & Clover

Terachi and Hayashi, pretty much for the same reasons as Taln.

What's a surname?

I`ve always been partial to 勅使河原 (because it`s one of those few 4 character family names) and 志賀 for various reasons.

Our family name is 矢部 - I`m sort of indifferent to it. It irritates the crap out of me to have to clarify how to say it when we`re out of Japan. Everyone tries to read it as one syllable with a long A. Argh.

I laughed out loud when I read that. So they read it to rhyme with 'babe', yeh?

I once had a deep Southerner read my full name in romaji, and man, he read all the 7 vowels wrong....and looong!

not that i have a favourite surname, however i have a friend who's name is 大和.

My favorite Japanese surnames would be Harunobu, and Takahasi.

Yes, that is exactly how they read it.
It`s incredibly frustrating. I`ve been asked "Like Abe Lincoln with a Y?" even AFTER clarifying the pronunciation.

Nope - at least not that we know of. Although thanks to him our nicknames are ALWAYS やべっち.

My favorite name(s)?
For me, it depends greatly on the person or people behind the name.

Imagine if you'd met a person, whom you truly disliked, who bore a name you liked.
You probably wouldn't look at it the same way after meeting that person.

Of course ~ you could just like a name for it's spelling. I'm not denying that.
... But it's a very common habit to associate names with faces or personalities... And that may somewhat influence the feelings you have towards them.

that's not bad, it could be worse, it could be キムタク even though that isn't really related to 矢部君.

My Japanese friends surnames are Sato (really common) and Yoshitaka.
