I like to draw/design every now and then..but I've never made anything >_> I'd love to be a designer, and get paid to just draw rather then make anything. Lol. My Hearts A Ticking Time Bomb. I am, i work for a small custom clothing company called trust truth and trinh.
few of my suits design pics are floating around some where in JF=) but best way to do it if you really are dedicated is this. 1. go to school for it obviously 2. pick what field you want to generalize in and specialize in 3. intern at MANY places, and yes they WILL work you hard until you build some experience. 4. NEVER EEEEVER let any one keep a Portfolio resume. only paper resumes. Portfolio resumes often get stolen and used. *hot topic and urban outfitters are NOTORIOUS for stealing intern/applicant portfolios* 5. its a very hard industry if you are pasionate about it dont give up. remember to be a designer you are going into a HIGHLY competitive and constantly changing work environment. this industry is highly organic so you have to adapt well and learn to collaborate with others well. Good luck! heres a personal Ty to all who voted and participated http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ER8CsVuTNY http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=housetek please check out the videos and subscribe! feel free to pm/aim/msn me for any Q's on Japan |

I design menswear for a fairly prominent brand in Australia (which shall remain anonymous). I first started there in a general admin roll and soon progressed into an assistant designer role.
I went to fashion school but i think what really got me the position was just working hard from the bottom ranks of the company and impressing management with my dedication etc... And for the poster who said that sewing machines are expensive, they certainly can be but they can also be cheap if you get a very basic one or even a second hand one from ebay. And sewing is easy to learn with the assistance of the internet, books or if you are lucky to know someone who knows how it will only take a few lessons until you become confident. I am heavily influenced by japanese fashion - a few of my favorite Japanese designers/labels are Diet Butcher Slim Skin, Julius, Lad Musician and of course the more comercial Issey, Comme and Junya... |
