Nope! All references state that Hyourinmaru is more powerful than Rukia's. On the other hand, Rukia's is the most beautiful zanpaktou in all of sereitei. It's more about grace than about power I guess

Trivia #15: Kuchiki Rukia is so far the only person in the series to have three different attack abilities with Shikai. Of course only one of them has been shown in the anime so far.

The awakening phrase is "Mai" (transalates to "dance")... Rukia has three different attack forms when sode no shirayuki is awakened. They are three diferent dances and they both involve different levels of ice attacks ^_^

I've seen Shinigami (i.e. Death Gods) come up in a lot of Anime series but I've wondered if they are a part of Japanese myth and legend or what?

of course. shinigami is a "myth" i would say. theyre suppose to be a "god" but honestly theyre not good or bad. we just think death is bad so theyre symbolized as a bad thing
