I wish I could drive a Lexus, but I don't. Why? It's expensive. That doesn't give me the excuse to steal one, though.
Do you pay for everything you read or watch?

Naturally, the industry cannot ignore technology, and we are seeing more of that happening. Crunchy Roll used to be like YouTube, but now they have gone legit, getting licenses from publishers to show anime. It still doesn't deny the fact when you steal something, you are hurting the industry. And this is at a time when the industry needs honest fans more than ever.

Personally i don't download or buy as i rarely have time for anime and manga...

however when i was in japan, i bought about 250 quids worth of onepiece from book off!... that i'm still reading..

however i do believe the industry is a little bit farfetched!!

as pointed out people exclaim that it's too expensive...

well i agree..

but MMM... i also agree if you can't afford a lexus don't steal one!!

my arguement though is about supply and demand and the markets your aiming at..

i think the manga companies are incredibly THICK!

MMM you don't own a lexus BECAUSE it's aimed at high flying millionaires.. it's at the price it is as it's a "luxury" item... people look at them and think "wow... that man is a mothertrucker with a whole lotta money"

however.

people don't see someone with a volume of manga and think "sweet jesus he's rich he's just bought 6 episodes of naruto"

the thing is..

the manga readers and anime watchers outside of japan are usually say...

12 - 21 year olds??? (in my experience)

i looked in HMV in london 2 days ago and a naruto volume i found (which was 24.99 quid)

http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/10985...t/Product.html

look at the RRP

so.. that volume has 12 episodes... 12 x 20 minutes = 4 hours viewing

4 hours = 25 quid. (about 50 dollars)

thats pretty expensive really.. and naruto is on the cheaper end of the scale..

if i went to my parents at about age 16... "can i have 25 quid to buy an anime" they'd tell me to take along walk off a short pier!

basically.. it IS to expensive for the market they're aiming at.

they should re-jig their supply and demand.

in no way do i support downloading as i'm an ANIMATION student at staffordshire university... oneday.. that is going to be MY stuff on the internet people are ripping me off for!

however.. i do think the industry shouldn't be so much of a "lexus" goods market.

sorry for essay/rant

I would agree that anime, especially, is sometimes overpriced. But it isn't out of greed or idiocy that this happens. When an anime is made in Japan the animators and voice actors are paid. When it is brought the West, they are paid again, but then we have to pay for translators, English voice actors, etc. It's an expensive proposition. One way some of the smarter companies counter this is by eliminated dubs and doing only subs. No voice actors, no studio time, big savings.

you speak nothing but truth. my cousins works on movie sets and he told us that its hard work. he told us that the muppet christmas carol movie would have taken alot of people to work the puppets, and that the effects took time also (about what he said i just remember the jist of it). the same applies for anime which takes alot of time to write a script, create a storyboard with concept art, animate, color, Voice acting the lines, which sounds easy but is a pain in the ass to do, and creating a final production. also you have to consider advertising in movie theatre's on tv, radio, newspapers, mazines, internet sites, etc.

Im not going to say Stealings bad dont watch or read anime and manga online, because then id be a hypocrite. i read manga and watch anime online, but then i eventually buy the book or DVD it so i can view it on my TV or read it in another room. only times ill read a manga online is when i finished a volume and want to see what happens, because they kill you with those cliff hangers. the same applies to movies. you can watch them for free but it kicks so much ass going to a theatre, because they have Surround Sound, and the phone isnt ringing, kids arent screaming.

Yeah I'm the same.

I fully respect MMM's plea to honest fans... the thing is I'm not an honest fan.

Much of the anime I watch (not all) among other things is because I have nothing to do and it's accessible. If it wasn't then I'd do/watch something else.

In saying that I buy/rent all the things that I appreciate at a deeper level whether they be anime or otherwise. (I have the Studio Ghibli collection and I'm working my way through the video store's Samurai Champloo collection at the moment.)

When Vertical Inc first released Buddha I liked it and went out and bought it. Because it was pretty successful they released other works by Tezuka such as Dororo and Black Jack.

Again I loved Monster, went and bought it and now Viz have released 20th Century Boys and Pluto by the same artist.

There have been so many series I've enjoyed that have been cancelled so I'm glad that people have gone out and bought these series. Because I think fans have been rewarded for parting with their cash.

really wish they would stop switching names aswell -.-

A lot of fans complained about censorship/editing as they want the same thing the Japanese readers are getting...and publishers are responding. Dark Horse has entered what it calls an "ere of no censorship". They have declared if they are going to stand behind a title, then censoring is not in the equation. I believe there was one censor in Berserk a few years ago (it was a child rape scene, if I remember correctly)

I see you mention language in translation, and I hope you aren't comparing scanlations to traditional translations. Japanese does not have swearing in the same way we do in English. I notice scanlations tend to be more liberal with the profanity, so don't assume profanity in official translations are censored.
