Like ponadok said, it's in some countries only where they have to pay royalties. So the issue (at least in the US) comes down to copying just as this was the issue with Napster... MP3's were being copied, so it broke copyright laws... however, if OneManga were to make their content blocked and unable to be copied, it would be perfectly legal... right?

I think that publishers aren't going to get very far with this when someone can be bothered to make a site where content can only be viewed and not copied! Unless I'm mistaken, this is the loophole that will be exploited!
The moment it is scanned and has been converted to e-form, it has been copied. You then have two versions from one original.

I'm not sure how it works, since I haven't seen the Copyright act, but I'm pretty sure it's talking about making a copy for distribution or re-sale since it's not against the law to make copies of your DVD's or music CD's.

Those copies are for personal use. You are not allowed to distribute those in any way. For example, you cannot legally copy a CD and give it to a friend.

In a similar way if I copy a manga and share it with anybody, it's illegal.

Here is the exact wording that appears in a manga.

No portion of this publication may be reproduced or transmitted, in any form or by any means, without the express written permission of <Publisher Name>. All rights reserved.

I think it is pretty clear.

Yes, I'm aware of that... but I'm allowed to make a copy of my DVD, have my friends come over and watch my film from the copied DVD... It would essentially be the same thing with having Manga available to be viewed, but not copied, would it not? I'm pretty sure that's how Spotify and Deezer work with music as well (though I think they do have some sort of agreement with music labels, I'm not sure). These services allow users to stream music for free. There is software that easily allows pictures to be viewed, but unable to be copied (usually tattoo websites have this software running on their designs so that people can't just copy that design and go to their local tattoo artist).

As for what it says... there isn't a specific copyright law JUST for Manga. Whatever I'm legally allowed to do with my DVD or book, I can do with a Manga!

I just looked at a CD and DVD case and both said copying, broadcasting and distribution are only allowed with written permission.

I had thought "archival" copies are OK for music CDs, although there was a point when some labels where attempting anti-copy software on the audio CDs, so maybe it isn't OK.

Regardless, it has never been OK to make archival copies of manga or other books.

Hmmm, I'm not going to pretend I actually know the law, so I'll just have to wait to see if a Manga version of Spotify or Deezer becomes available.

Even if it wasn't legal I’m still sad about it closing down that was one of the few ways I could read Manga.

You mean it was one of the few ways you could read manga without paying for it.

FUCKING THIS. EVERY TIME. It always had to involve anime. Don't get me wrong, I love anime; but whenever I mention that I study Japanese at my Michigan school, someone always has to say "Oh, ching chong. Ping Pang", or "Don't the Japanese have those Chinese cartoons?",
