acctually there is no point comparing the two. Each is a product of art and has a different cultural background. American comics/manga would not copy the Japanese style and vice versa . Yes japanese manga are slowly entering into the American market, but its too soon to say if it can catch up with what the current market of American comics.

hey. im not saying anything against your opinions but im a manga artist. and im NORTH american. i can draw just as well as japanese mangaka and i havent taken any classes. everyone has their own style. theres nothing that says manga or anime has to look a certain way so why put standards on them that weren't there before? but i do agree most american anime sux ass. not just the art but the story lines as well. and to say one last thing i do plan on moving to japan to persue a career in manga/anime. once i get a better hold on the language that is. *blushes*

Most American anime and manga is not as good as Japanese anime and manga but even though I have never seen American anime or manga that is as good as Japanese, I believe it can still exist. You don't have to be Japanese or live in Japan to make anime or manga, the content needs to be right, thats all. The closest thing I have seen to Japanese anime and manga in the US is Avatar: The Last Airbender. It is very well developed and is close to passing as anime but the 'manga' which is based on the anime/cartoon (wherever you think it fits) needs a lot of work.

In my opinion manga are comics that come from Japan and manhwa are comics that come from Korea. Just like beer made in Canada is beer, and beer made in Japan is biiru.

Have you ever heard of cultural diffusion? Manga is a great example of cultural diffusion. It is when an idea or invention begins to be used and eventually made in other countries. It originates from one country but it eventually gets passed on to others who use the idea. Think about religions, Buddhism for example. It started in one place and then got passed all over the world. Just because it is practiced in other places doesn't make it not Buddhism.

Manga originates from Japan. That can never change. But Japanese comics (manga) have become popular all around the world. People from other countries read manga and they are starting to produce it. Sure, most of it doesn't come out as nicely as Japanese manga does but with practice other countries will be better about making manga. I just find that there is a certain depth found in manga that is not typically found in other comics. It may just be me though.

I agree that Japanese manga is better than American manga and the producers of American manga may get better at it or they may not. There are some people who produce American manga who are closer to Japanese manga than others. The thing is that even if it typically isn't as good as Japanese manga, it can be made in countries other than Japan. It can be made out of North America too. It can be made anywhere, sure its different but it can still exist as manga. I personally prefer Japanese manga and anime but there are two animes that I watch that are not from Japan. One is from the US and the other is from France. The 'manga' for them really stinks but as animes they are fine. Now don't get me wrong, there are too many horrible tries at anime and manga out there that turn out horrible but there are a few that don't. A few that are close to that made in Japan. Just because they are made in another country doesn't mean they don't deserve a chance.

I am really starting to like debating here

what defines manga? - 08-08-2007, 05:13 PM

I dont think manga is anything. I think manga is just...nothing. Manga is the Japanese word for comic. Its just comics. So nothing really deffines it. Some might say its an art style, but the truth is there are no praticular styles, there is a certaint style that you will often see in main stream manga, but its not the only style.

When Japanese draw "manga" there just drawing comics.

westerners seem to think manga is this new invention that Japanese created, but its nothing. So westerners cant draw manga because it never excisted in the first place.

Im sorry, does that make sence?
