Pro Comic Artist Goes to Japan...uh oh

Takeshi Miyazawa has drawn Spiderman X-Men and other American comics (he was born and raised in Canada).

He went to publisher Kodansha in Japan to try and get published in Japan.

Here is his tale:

I don't post this to discourage artists from trying, but getting published in Japan is going to be REALLY hard for a foreigner

I'd imagine that the Japanese don't really read American comics which is a shame, especially if they're going to do their own manga versions of Spiderman (the Ryoichi Ikegami version) and Star Trek. I guess the Americans draw manga style and remake Japanese films, so it's not really a bad thing, it's just that the results tend to be very disappointing.

I have heard that its hard for foreigners to get manga published in Japan.

However, just from reading that, I cant say for sure it was because he wasnt born in Japan.

It sounds like its just hard to get manga published in general. They only take the best of the best.

Although, I think there are cultural things, that makes manga Japanese. If you werent raised in Japan, its may be harder to make it actualy feel Japanese.

I think that is probably true. Manga artists draw for a Japanese audience. I think that is what makes them special, and a unique cultural window.
