in that case. i'll post my opinion about this thread....
To me. everything influences everything and you can never say its one thing for certain... whether the japanese believe in fitting in or not. it has nothing to do with it. some people might be influenced to murder due to some cool killing in an anime. and some might be influenced by watching a horror movie, and some might just be sick... after all. somone has to invent the stuff for others to copy. but i have to say. anime's are generally far more violent than other types of cartoons, and there doesn't tend to be a real age limit. parents seem to let children watch animes cos they are cartoons..... All in all, i wish people would stop blaming violence and crime etc etc on movies/games/cartoons etc etc... everyone has a choice... why don't you educate people to make the right choices in life so that they DONT commit crime and so that the rest of the world can enjoy some fictional violence |

1) How old are you? 2) Do you live in Japan? *visiting for 6 months does not count* 3) Are you Japanese? 4) If you are not Japanese and you life here and are older then 20, What do you do for a living? Let me start 1) 30 2) Raised in Kyoto for 8 years and have been living here for the past 10 years. 3) I am American/German 4) I am a VP for a tier 1 investment bank in the middle of Tokyo. This is why I ask. Outsiders never see what goes on. On your crime point. My wife is a lawyer. Trust me, there is murder everyday here. A mom just dropped her baby out of a 6 story building because she did not want her BF to find out she had a kid. Well he knows now. Japanese media is still like North/South Korea. They are censored by the government. You will never see a mass injection of murder or rape or anything else in this country. You think the younger generation is trying to break free? Go to Harajuku McDonalds and order a Cheese burger with no pickles. You just stopped business for 30 min. They can not pull this off without checking with the manager and the manager has to pull out the manual. Look, I dont mean to come and tell you that you are all wrong. Because you are not. I am here to clarify. Everyone here paints this picture of Japan then gets slapped with reality when they get here. I love living here. and yes it is safer then anywhere else. This is true. But this is the most closed society in asia. Did you know Japan is the only country in Asia that can not speak English? Sure they study in school for 2 years, but they are not like Korea and China who use it as a second language. I love living here because the little robot lifestyle they live allows me to make massive money here. More then I would make in the US. I manage a 37 man full Japanese team at work. All are my direct reports. If I was not there, the whole department would fail. And another thing, the news.... Dont belive everything. He is a police chief. they are not going to admit anything he did bad. This would loose what little face the have left for the police in Japan. Even Japanese people dont belive their own news. This is something they ARE working on. I am going to post a thread in the general forum... read it. |

anime is posotively not the reason people do things...i mean, ya, sometimes i wish i could do that juijutsu and karate stuuf. but i cant i and i have to face the facts. but some people cant distinguish fiction to reality and do crazy stuff, and even though anime influenced it they are not the cause. its the person who watches. others are more mature and sane than others.
what u r saying is that anime inlufens real violence. its kinda like saying wrestling in america influences villence in reality here too. it does, but u never see wrestling getting changed, so why change anime in japan? -Keila (me) Think about it. It means that without one there is no other...love without hate...happiness without anger...black with no white...dirty with no clean....understand it. Ying Yang...we all have our differences and must learn to accept one another...we all need something to make us who we are. We all need support...we all have an angel. My Words Of Wisdom |

i agree with you. since i've been on this forum and reading lots of threads i've noticed that people think japan is some kinda perfect society with no crime and people are PERFECT. and whats worse, they generally tend not to accept it when someone tells them its not true. i don't know if its cos they are kids/ignorent, but i'm sure if they ever go to japan they'll find out. As for your description about the mcdonalds thing etc etc. i'd have to say that is quiete acurate from my experience. In my uni, i'm responsible for making NEW foreign students welcome and also i'm the guy that shows them the uni/town/shops/banks etc etc etc. what i've noticed is that BOTH chinese and Japanese seem a little clueless at first. They don't know what to do without me "holding their hands". where as americans/russians/australian/spanish etc etc seem to be fine. they only need my services for about an hour or two. But i kinda gotta disagree with you about the english as a second language in korea/china and other asian countries... they might study it at school, but most of them don't have a clue. its like english people studying french. they might study it for 8 years but they are mutes. to me this is strange. cos they ahve to have a certain level in english before they come to uni. EILS or something like that. from what i've seen both in china and here in my uni, most people don't know english. they know some words here and there, but i would never say its their second language. or near to being a second language. |

When I said typo I was reffering to when you said
"So when i look at these Harajuku girls or Shibuya girls, I see freedom of expression. I see people following a fad till they are about 22 then putting on a suit and going to work." That dosent make sence. Unless you meant... "So when i look at these Harajuku girls or Shibuya girls, I DON'T see freedom of expression. I see people following a fad till they are about 22 then putting on a suit and going to work." I wouldnt have pointed it out...I just wanted to make sure I understood what you were saying. Ok, listen to me: I don't think Japan is some perfect place where everyone is kind and respectfull. I know thats an ignorant steriotype. But you were kind of making it sound like Japan was some awfull, trashy, place. Which simply isn't true. Yes, there is a lot of crime. But there is a lot LESS crime, and it is A LOT safer than most other modern countries. Thats all I am trying to say. I dot agree with you on a few things, but I think we are on the same page, and we are trying to say the same thing. We are just misscomunicating. Are you sure that Japanese dont usualy speak english as a second language? Because when I was in Japan (no it was not over 6 months) everyone I talked to (under the age of...umm 4o maybe?) knew fluent english. You would probably know more than me, I'm not trying to argue with you (at the moment) I'm just asking. One more thing (it's irelevent, I just thought I would ask since you live in Japan) is it currently possible for a foriegner to become a Japanese citzen? I heard it wasn't, but I'm not really sure how acurate my source was. |

About speaking english, you may have been with a group who focuses on speaking english. That is cool. When you come to Tokyo again, we will take a walk to shinjuku or shibuya and we will try to spend our day as a gaijin and only speak english. Dont say i did not warn you. As far as becoming a citizen, you can. It is tough. Most people get perminant status. You can do anything a Japanese can do exept Vote. |
