Thanks for the help. Most of my vocab comes from a BBC phrasebook, & it has Britain & England as Igirisu. While this doesn't bother me, the problem comes if asked 'Are you British?', which I guess could be true, but I would prefer to say, 'No. I'm Scottish'. Would this confuse the person? I guess I made a fuss over an obstacle I'd try to avoid. I suppose I'd better get use to such complexity's if learning such an amazing language

Hmm well being over nationalistic is dangerous. I am English married to a wonderful scotsman.
sometime scotland feels rather remote from LONDON and its parliament. When I lived up there there used to be complaints about being ruled from London. Being so far away and not on the same wavelength Scotland does have some better conditions re students having free University-- one has to remember that comes from taking from all the tax payers. They brought in a Bill to care for the elderly without charging. How on earth they will find the money to do that!! I wish I knew. Sc ots often are very proud of their own country-- but an awful lot of them still migrate down here and overseas. I think its dangerous to be too nationalistic. also very insular. Y |

Decimus is right. There is a lot of contributing factors, but what it all boils down to is the English. I have no problem with the English, a lot of them are very nice people, but when people say British, they usually mean English. I am hugely proud to be Scottish, and love the country very much (its the political side, both here and in London, that annoys me. lol). When England won the 1966 World Cup, they still went on about it in 2010 before South Africa. It was 44 years ago, get over it. Also, if tennis player Andy Murray is doing well, the news people say he's British, and if he does poor, he then becomes Scottish. They try to use Britain to help make England look better, even though he's Scottish. It happens with a lot of Sports people. While it's technically true that I am British, I would prefer to be known as Scottish

And may I remind you that what you're describing is called a 'welfare' state. lol. They don't ''take'' anything from you. You PAY taxes for that exact purpose - to pay for university and/or for the treatment of elders. [ ♥<-- Jordan's heart! \(Ò_ó)/ ]
