URL works fine?

I don't have time to wait and see if every random prediction comes true. I'd rather spend my time more wisely and concern myself over actual, provable predictions. Just because people on the internet tell you to worry about something, doesn't mean you have to take them seriously.

The misunderstanding comes from people not understanding the meaning of ancient calendars, but also, more fundamentally, thinking that people thousands of years ago could make any kind of accurate prediction of events so far in the future when contemporaries can barely do this over short periods of time.

Thanks for telling me that what I said was my opinion. What you just said was also your opinion. You're welcome.

Believe me. There's no reason to worry. The reason this kinda story makes the rounds, especially on the internet, is because it's scary. You don't get viral internet fads about how fascinating and complex Mayan culture was. You just get them about how these creepy, wise seeming ancient people said you're gonna die in a terrifying fashion.

Think skeptically and you'll be able to relax.

what i ment by fix the url is change the name becuase its a theory and not a myth

and i didn't say you had to wait either way in all reality the way you age and the time that passes your basicly just waiting for your time card to be up and then you die and it didn't origonate through the internet cuz the mayan calander wasn't created online the posts is peoples opinion on the matter

your forgetting the fact that it is possible to have such predictions, like Nostradamist(sp?) which is where the whole debate started because his journal was found and it just so happenes that when he predicted the world to end was when the mayan calander ended and the reason why it is such a debate because his last prediction was correct and if you weren't awear his last prediction was of hitler's doings

and do not be ignorent to some one you don't know

As someone just showed, the apocalyptic angle wasn't necessarily the intention of the Mayans, and just exploded on the internet.

I don't think either of us know the details of these things particularly well. Please listen to these explanations by someone who has researched the topic. If you don't believe him then that's that, but at least go over some research. Maybe follow some citations on the Wiki page at least.

Skeptoid:
2012
Nostradamus
(You can listen to him read his research as well)

touche i know very little but i do atleast know some

and if you have another site besides wiki i will be more then happy to read but wiki itself can't always be trusted because some of it is fan based but and not always correct so if you have some other site then i will be more than willing to read

Sorry if you didn't notice. I said to follow the citations in the Wiki entry. I agree you can't just read what's directly on the Wiki for sensitive information. If the citations are from reputable sources then it's fine, just read those.

I also linked you to the Skeptoid.com guy's personal research which is excellent. Please read or listen to his episodes on these topics, they're quite short and entertaining.

I don't want to argue about something I have limited knowledge of, so I won't say anything else about the details. However, I stick to my previous, more general argument: when people make predictions today, with all the modern tools they still often get things wrong. How can people thousands of years ago, using crude astronomy, make a prediction that is even irrelevant to astronomy? This is a argument from faith in ancient peoples, or long traditions. Even if they did mean that 2012 would be an apocalypse, there's not a single reason to believe them.

If you care about human civilisation, listen to contemporary thinkers talking about relevant data like water levels, climate, food shortages, populations etc, not ancient people who had no idea what modern society would be like and worshiped astral bodies.

Hope this site can help
The Doomsday List
It's a list of past failed (obviously) doomsday predictions. Don't let yourself get scared by every single stupid prediction. There'll be more after 2012, that's a guaranteed prediction! Get some perspective.
