Question Public BathHouses - 06-01-2009, 11:39 PM

Im not sure if this has been asked but in manga/anime I see that in public bath houses they dont wear any clothes/bathing suits .....does this really happen in Japan right now?

Or do they use towels to cover up?

No they don't, they are naked and it's just not in their culture to find that very weird.

Personally, before I might have been shy and stuff but now I decided I don't give a damn. I think hotsprings look really nice and relaxing so I wouldn't be bothered for the sake of my own relaxation. We shouldn't be ashamed of our natural human bodies

From the sky, To the ground
Rain is falling all around
Thunder rain and wind
A song of storms begins

Play a song, A melody
Then everybody will see
The hero of time
Has come

Yes, that is all correct and they do use towels to cover up.

My wife would often spend a weekend with a friend at an Onsen Ryoken. She loved it.

If you feel inclined to visit an Onsen, their are many options both Public and Private.

The best type is a private room over looking a mountain range with your own private Onsen to enjoy the view. That option is usually expensive.

We often stayed at Coganoi Bay Hotel in Wakayama prefecture, and it had a small public onsen in the large garden.

For some reason, it wasn't popular so I took full advantage and enjoyed my time in it.

I did meet a few ladies also enjoying it, and the embarassment on my part soon dissapeared over some friendly conversation.

So don't worry, do as the Japanese do, go and experience one, and let your pleasure overtake your embarrasment

Cheers - Oz

1970's or 80's, there are such bath houses in every town all ever Japan. I mean not only hot spring are.

Now those bath houses are very rare but still exist even in Tokyo for example.

Because Every personal house has bath equiped inside it, public bath houses(銭湯;sento) are har d to survive.

No, they don`t use towels to cover up.
We go to some onsen or another pretty much every other weekend. Everyone is totally naked and totally relaxed about it.
It`s not a pool, it`s for actually getting clean which would be hard to do with a bathing suit or towel wrapped around you.

If anyone is trying to find me… Tamyuun on Instagram is probably the easiest.

All my Japanese friends tell me the same thing:

Unisex hot springs/public baths use towels to cover up.
Same-sex hot springs don't.

And I have never been to a hot spring/public bath, so I don't know from first-hand experience.
