I've always heard that Onsen are beautiful.
As far as public bathing goes, I've done it so long that being naked is just an annoyance for me. The home had public baths, the women and girls at the gym shower together, public showers at beaches. You just get used to it after awile. The only problem is when you get people who like to comment on you while you're naked. That leads to some serious discomfort. -A saying used in our Dojo |

I have a question about onsens now. I know that you're supposed to shower thoroughly before soaking in those nice baths (I still would like to try this at least once). Now, how do you know, by Japanese standards, if you're scrubbed thoroughly enough? Is it necessary to wash your hair before going in?

I'm surprised you wouldn't expect it, especially since you ARE naked in a public place. The fact that this "Onsen" is a Japanese thing and has their rules and customs associated with it, doesn't mean that the rest of the world is going to be the same. Hell, they aren't even obliged to be polite, especially since being naked anywhere in public and not getting any flak is a privilege for YOU. Seriously, I wouldn't have a problem with it...thank God I'm like Josh (maan, I was staring at your post for minutes)
But, problem is, I would find myself uncomfortable that I am looking at others...especially younger women ( I know I know) Man I'm busy as hell. Hit me up on MSN or pm me.

Wouldn't it depend on the hair type, though? When I wash my hair, since it is permed, I have to dry, condition, and blow dry right after it, if I don't want it to get nappy and unmanageable. If I wear my braids, you don't wash your hair, you use this cleaning treatment and spray on the scalp. If you do wash your hair with braids, it frizzes up. That's why I was wondering. For the record, I'm African American, so I was wondering how that worked for those with our hair type.
