I will bet that the reasons most people self harm are absoulety trivial compared to the REAL-LIFE SUFFERING going on in the REAL world. So i mostly have contempt for self-harmers.

I regularily help out at charities and collect money for vicitms of war mainly in mid-east but also world-wide and recently they sponsored this kid hassan 14 yers old - who had lost both his arms and his face was burned beyond recognition in iraq bombings. One of the guys who went over there told me that when he spoke to him - hassan said he wanted his body to heal quickly as possible so that he could look after his baby brother!! - who was the only other survivor in the bombing - rest of the family all dead, no home no land no money NOTHING. So this is why when i hear of people self-harming my main reaction is always to roll my eyes and think what a F******, because they dont know what real suffering is and it is especially worse when they are well off kids ! |

my situation is so small compared to that...and even though all that pain he must be suffering, he still focused on his brother. thats so sweet yet sad because of what happened |

It depends on the reason.
In martial arts, self-inflicted pain is performed in various ways to train the body and mind. In another example, a person might endure self-inflicted pain to protect someone else or risk self-inflicted pain in order to prevent others from experiencing it. With this said, I wouldn't say self-inflicted pain is always a bad thing. The self-inflicted pain I don't agree with is the kind done because of depression. Of course, in this world, there will always be the exception, but generally it is unnecessary and, in some ways, selfish. There's also the case of those doing it because they think it's "cool" or "romantic". ... But I shouldn't have to explain where the problem lies with those ones. |
