SPD and SID -
12-16-2008, 12:29 AM
I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but I was wondering if anybody else has been diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) or Sensory Integration Disorder (SID) ? I was when I was little, and so far I haven't met anybody else with it. This caused a lot of problems for me when I was younger, and I would often stay by myself in the dark, but now I've adjusted greatly, but it's still difficult. For me, I'm oversensitive to touch (only on the back of my body), poor-hand motor skills, and oversensitive sight and hearing. A Little Sympton Chart of What I Have. ( I only kept the symptoms I have) The website is : Sensory Processing Disorder 1. Hypersensitivity To Touch (Tactile Defensiveness) _X_ becomes fearful, anxious or aggressive with light or unexpected touch _X_ as an infant, did/does not like to be held or cuddled; may arch back, cry, and pull away _X_ appears fearful of, or avoids standing in close proximity to other people or peers (especially in lines) _X_ becomes frightened when touched from behind or by someone/something they can not see (such as under a blanket) _X_ bothered by rough bed sheets (i.e., if old and "bumpy") _X_ avoids group situations for fear of the unexpected touch _X_ resists friendly or affectionate touch from anyone besides parents or siblings (and sometimes them too!) _X_ may overreact to minor cuts, scrapes, and or bug bites _X_ avoids touching certain textures of material (blankets, rugs, stuffed animals) _X_ refuses to wear new or stiff clothes, clothes with rough textures, turtlenecks, jeans, hats, or belts, etc. _X_ avoids/dislikes/aversive to "messy play", i.e., sand, mud, water, glue, glitter, playdoh, slime, shaving cream/funny foam etc. _X_ will be distressed by dirty hands and want to wipe or wash them frequently _X_ distressed by seams in socks and may refuse to wear them _X_ distressed by clothes rubbing on skin; may want to wear shorts and short sleeves year round, toddlers may prefer to be naked and pull diapers and clothes off constantly _X_ is a picky eater, only eating certain tastes and textures; mixed textures tend to be avoided as well as hot or cold foods; resists trying new foods 3. Poor Tactile Perception And Discrimination: _X_ has difficulty with fine motor tasks such as buttoning, zipping, and fastening clothes _X_ may be a messy dresser; looks disheveled, does not notice pants are twisted, shirt is half un tucked, shoes are untied, one pant leg is up and one is down, etc. _X_ has difficulty using scissors, crayons, or silverware _X_ may not be able to identify objects by feel, uses vision to help; such as, reaching into backpack or desk to retrieve an item (One I Made Up) _X_ I can't do the peace sign easily, and I cannot at all hold the three middle fingers up at one time. Ha. 1. Sensory Seeking Behaviors: (Carley - Some of these are probably normal, though) _X_ stomps feet when walking (I did that alot when I was little) _X_ kicks his/her feet on floor or chair while sitting at desk/table _X_ bites or sucks on fingers and/or frequently cracks his/her knuckles _X_ loves to be tightly wrapped in many or weighted blankets, especially at bedtime _X_ loves/seeks out "squishing" activities _X_ would jump on a trampoline for hours on end _X_ grinds his/her teeth throughout the day _X_ loves jumping off furniture or from high places _X_ chews on pens, straws, shirt sleeves etc. 2. Haha. I was just kidding. I think I'm gonna take that little survey myself tomorrow. As for now though, I'm out. Goodnight, C.G.

They contribute to my weirdness. Though that doesn't necessarily mean everyone with SPD or SID is weird ^_^ EDIT: To the Auditory part of this . . . I remember many times when I was a little kid that I would be up for hours, because I could hear the ticking of a clock on the other side of the house. Did anyone else get distracted by that? or Ever hear it? Help my Cause for homeless teens!

I don't think medication is the way to go, but to just stimulate your senses. Usually, you start doing that when you're young and its not as overwhelming when you get older. Help my Cause for homeless teens!
