I'm not too sure if you're talking about China today or 30+ years ago. As for Rural China, where is that exactly? Places like Tibet for example don't even have this one Child Policy and you can't really get more rural than that!

Rural China = any kind of settlement in The People's Republic of China (ok, excluding Tibet, who are autonomous anyway) without at least a non-agricultural population of 100,000.

I for one, think this should be applied, short term, for the whole world. At a maximum of two children per couple. It would reduce the stress on the lack of resources we have at this moment.

You get fines for damaging property or littering... are we placing human lives in the same category as objects? I think if people choose to have more than 2 children, they should have the freedom to do so without being "punished".
As for the world's resources, we could always try to be more responsible.

I think this should apply to some countries in the world. China really needs that law, and maybe they should make a law that each couple should have atleast 1 daughter. China needs women.

I know that China has a population problem... But I just don't think it's right to not be able to have more than one/two children. It's one of those personal things.

when i first heard about the china's one-child policy, my first reaction is just like you.

then i met real chinese people, and through our discussion, it was obvious that the policy is much needed in a big country like china. it's whether the one child policy, or china separated into various countries for easier governance.

the thing is, they also spoke about rural families taking medication so that when a mother gave birth, she would gave birth to as many children as possible, because it is OK to have multiple children, as long as they came during the same birth. pills to make quadruplets were widely use, because rural families need several strong sons to help them with their farm etc.

the importance of having a son is also significant, as the son is going to bear the family name, and since the wife is going to be with her husband, the family with only one daughter is left with no one to take care of them when their daughter is wed off.

it has been like... 20 years? since they implement the policy, and i'm very interested to know to what extent the impact has been to china, socially and economically.

is it a successful policy?

Considering America uses more oil than the rest of the world combined, I think we have a pretty big dent in good ol' mother nature.

And did you know that California now uses more oil than CHINA? Yes! China, the very country that sparked this ridiculous conversation.

California alone uses more gasoline than any country in the world (except the US as a whole, of course). That means California's 20 billion gallon gasoline and diesel habit is greater than China's! (Or Russia's. Or India's. Or Brazil's. Or Germany's.)

And the funny thing is, America is so brainwashed by Christianity that they're trying to keep people from getting birth control and legal abortions..

Don't pounce on Christians too hard. In general, people don't like the loss of a life; I'm sure it's not just Christians that are disturbed by abortion.
I thought it necessary to clarify, lest an anti-Christian sentiment arose in this debate.

To set a more moderate tone, let me just add that I, as a Christian, in regard to abortion, wouldn't mind either way. Could that mean I'm not completely brainwashed?
