I just moved to Michigan after living in Japan and was happy to find that there are Japanese festivals. Last New Years we had omochitsuki (making mochi) at my kids Japanese school which was a lot of fun. U of M also has quite a few events including a Japanese Quiz Bowl where 600 elementary and middle school children competed to test their Japanese language skills. My Iaido dojo did a demonstration at the Bowl which was well received.

Sure, NZ has a great multi-ethnic society so there's always cultural festivals happening across the country. Not as much activities rurally as in the cities of course. Kohanga Reo (kindergarten) and Primary Schools (ages 5-10/12) are really great at teaching cultural awareness at a young age.

Yup the Aki Matsuri comes around every year I'm actually part of the organization who sets up the festival but I don't think I'm going to be helping out this year cause of my job but I'll probably just give a big donation for raffle tickets heh.
What do you guys have at your festival? our is only a one day thing untill we get the Japanese culture center set up, (Usually we hold it at the hispanic culture center). |
