There are words that are more offensive than others. That's something I've learned. At the same time, it also depends on the person. You might not find "white trash" offensive, but there are people who do.

Of course it's my opinion.

I am not going to worry about the possibility of a white person who grew up as an outcast being offended by a word that has never been used here before today. When that person comes she can make her feelings known to me and we will work it out then.

Somebody must have thought I am reasonable and sensible enough to make these kinds of decisions, or I wouldn't be a mod.

I like that. Hate crimes aren't any different from murder.

There is discrimination, though. For example, Henry Louis Gates Jr., a black prestigious Harvard professor, was recently arrested for being inside of his own home. There were children at a pool in Pennsylvania who were people of color, and who were asked to leave because they "changed the complexion" of the pool. There were also reports of other little white children asking their parents, "Mommy, why are there black people here?"

It's true that people can sue, but what if the jury also discriminates?

Sorry, I don't know what you mean by "race baiting." Is it kind of like, "You're trying to get a racist reaction"? Because if so, I can't pull racism out of people unless it actually exists first.

You're right, I was speculating. I'm not questioning you as a mod. I'm not trying to say you don't deserve to be one. Sure, we've had our problems in the past, but you obviously play an important role in this online community. I am suggesting, though, that words like "white trash" be taken seriously. You say that it hasn't happened before today, which is good. But what if someone were to use "white trash" and no one came to you? It's possible that someone could be too afraid to say anything, especially after seeing some of the flames on this thread as a reaction to people conscious of racism. Yeah, I know that's speculation again - but I'm just saying, it may happen. That's something to be taken seriously.

No, I'm not trying to "pull the racism out of you" because - hopefully - it doesn't exist. I just want to understand what your opinion is.
