The real answer is patience and trying not to interpret anything from your perspective rather than his.

I went to Japan, and my host "sister" was extremely normal.

It was shocking at first, but surprisingly it was the least awkward month of my life.

We went to a dinosaur museum, went to the ocean, temples, went and watched fireflies, played with fireworks, went shopping at the local grocery store, played video games, read manga, watched T.V., talked about social differences and ironies while enjoying frozen mandarin oranges.

Those are my favorite memories.

Just do entertaining things, show him the local sights, and take him to the mall.

Just do whatever feels natural... maybe ask him what he wants to do.

Ugh Miami, what a hell hole.

I admire you for surviving there that long long . You deserve a metal, its not just the criminals its the heat, hurricanes and just city life that make it bad. I'll stick with my tiny town in the panhandle.

On October 24th and 25th there is a Japanese Fall Festival at the Ft. Worth Japanese gardens. He might enjoy that and give you both something to talk about his home.
BTW, I have 2 cowboy hats.
