It doesn't quite work like that. Unlike many other careers, a comics artist isn't hired for a job as much as commissioned for a project. You are not hired based on what degree you have or where you studied, but how talented you are. Your portfolio will open doors, not your resume.

That may be true, but a degree of some sort opens doors and enriches your portfolio... I have a friend who's a very talented artist. Due to money issues, he didn't have enough money to go to university and struggled for many years as an artist. He saved up some money from whatever job he had, went to university (more like an art school), and after just two years, so many doors were opened for him because of the degree... The degree allowed him to learn new techniques, manage his time etc (everything most people learn from a degree), but most of all, because of university connections, he worked on small projects for magazines, newspapers, websites, TV and Film etc... All of these made his portfolio much richer... A portfolio isn't always judged by the talent that's inside... sometimes, it can be treated like a resume... Having work you've done for known companies in your portfolio can be what separates you from the hundreds of other very talented artists
