"Why do you want to learn Japanese?" -

How do you guys answer when others ask you this question?
I'm just wondering, haha. A lot of people around me are ' ' <-- like that, when I say I'm taking a Japanese class this fall semester in college. Since I don't really have plans on moving or living in Japan or teaching there AND the fact that Japanese class 1, 2, and 3 don't fulfill any graduation units [only 4, 5, do ].. my peers are kind of taken aback LOL. I've always liked the language, culture and entertainment (dramas, anime, music) too. All their skepticism and "dissaprovement" kind of discourages me a little, to be honest. And I know very well that learning Spanish would be better (I live in California, and since I want to become a Dentist.. it would help; I do plan on learning it too). What are your reasons? |

having a japanese friend has inspired me to learn and discover?
ALso not for me but I believe in the business world there is a need to learn to speak and understand-- also Chinese I suspect. Japanese and Chinese is being taught in quite a few schools and colleges I believe. It is good to study and try to understand other countries and their cultures. |

I went to a middle school that offered Spanish as the only language course. Naturally I took it upon myself to teach myself Japanese because, as Houstonian, I refuse to learn Spanish
