Sengoku or Three Kingdoms? - 09-24-2010, 10:41 PM

Hey guys! My two favourite historical periods are... Sengoku (Warring States) and the Three Kingdoms period.

This isn't meant to be a China versus Japan thread because both of these periods were awesome!

Which one is your favourite? and why?

Do people in Japanese schools study either of the periods?

EDIT: Just... in case no one knows.
Sengoku is the historical period in Japan between 1467–1573.
The three main leaders/rulers were Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu.

The Three Kingdoms is the historical period in China between 220AD-280AD
There were three kingdoms, Wei (Notable people are Cao Cao and his son Cao Pi), Wu (Notable people are Sun Jian, Sun Ce, and Sun Quan), and Shu (Notable people are... Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei).

Yeah... I hope someone knows at least one of these people :S.

Yeah, it's pretty tough! I really can't decide either, but I was sure many people know of, or are fans of it here!

I like both.....
School lessons are only Sengoku period.
As for Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it is only a clarification with a short three stroke degree.

Oh, I guess it would make sense to only have Sengoku period haha, but maybe if it was a course on asian history then it would be mentioned.

I don't really get what you mean by short three stroke degree though ;/.

I might be biased because I knew about the Three Kingdoms long before Sengoku. I was enthralled by it- I read 3000 pages of it's story in college- though at the time I wasn't even aware there was a Japanese equivilent.

I'm slowly getting into it, and I have some favorites, but Sengoku seems more depressing. While bad things happen in both stories, Three Kingdoms enliven me with tall tales of heroism and bravery. While Sengoku presents the same laced with more sadness, and the trechery is more depressing.

Obviously just my personal viewpoint.

Woah... I want to read it!... I had a look at the Art of war though... but it doesn't really mean anything to me.

Many people I know, know Three Kingdoms more than Sengoku ;/.

Sengoku does have a tragic part to it, and that's what I mainly read about.

I don't know how I could describe it.

I feel like Sangokushi is something that is much more "good feel", there are bravery, tricks, and faith (like how many people believe that Liu Bei is the rightful guy to be the emporer because of his bloodline)

Sengoku, it's just bussiness. I feel like that. It has nothing about ideal, logic or anything. It's all about greed, lust and jealousy. I think the relationship between Toyotomi clan and Oda clan is quite complex for me to understand.

Anyway I love both of them, but I would choose Sengoku because it's nearer to our time, as such I think it's easier to understand
