Isn't it ironic? Where do you study East Asian Studies?

Yeah.
I wouldn't say they hate us; they just don't care about us and our needs.

I may soon be getting a real job, and if I do get it, I should have more than enough money to study in Japan. I am planning on studying for five to six years, because the first place I am going to is to learn the language itself, and these people have a program that is supposed to help you pass the JLPT and get into various universities.

My intention is to be an interpreter/translator, for Japanese to English AND Spanish(English and Spanish= my native languages, though I shouldn't know Spanish and don't like to consider it one of my native languages, since that's not really our language, but nobody can speak whatever language the Taíno spoke anymore), and vice versa. Mostly interpreter, but I love both the spoken and written language very much (especially the written language, and obviously, to pass the JLPT and most importantly, get into a university there, you really do need to be capable of speaking, reading, and writing the language.

If and when I get the chance, I also want to learn Mandarin and German, and maybe Thai. Languages interest me very much, probably from a desire to understand people, and my general love of languages.

I'll be graduating next month from a University.
I guess all I can tell you about being a student is pretty self-explanatory. You live, you learn, you work, you whine here and there about the fees but remain a little relieved you get some kind of support from the school, the government and some organization or two that are willing to support you as long as you perform well. Blah, blah, blah. You relax when you can and then nearly pull out all your hair because you realize that you procrastinated to the point that you have to produce a lengthy research paper by the next day. Of course, you mange to pull it off and become so confident in your skills that you become a habitual procrastinator (it's a never-ending cycle, really).

Amongst all the demands of college life, you still make time for friends, family and other relationships....and before you know it, you've managed to claw yourself through all the turmoil. And what do you gain for your endurance? A piece of paper that supposedly makes you a better person in the eyes of others.

But perhaps this paper isn't just a prize, perhaps it's a document that proves to the world that you suffered like crazy, but managed to hang in there...all while learning a thing or two about your chosen discipline. A very desirable trait in the eyes of many, I'd say. So then, you take comfort in knowing that the more you suffer, the more desirable you become...sort of like that rugged man we all know whose body is filled with scars and, as a result, seems like a manly man to all the women who just can't seem to stop lusting over him. So you take this mentality with you and contemplate....applying to Graduate school *shudder*

What are you hoping to do when you graduate.

do you get support whilst you are working so hard? I do hope so.

Last night on Question Time here in UK there was a discussion about the fees students have to pay-- not so long ago students did not have to pay-- as far as I can understand-- one of the women on thepanel stated that she would not be where she is-- doing pretty well I gather-- if she had not had the university opportunities that she had. She says that being at UNI made her the person she is today-- so persevere if you can-- hard as it is.
No, it's just hypocritical that the ones that did benefit going to uni because of the low fees are now imposing impossibly high fees on students. I'm not saying uni is bad, nor am I dismissing my degree. I work hard for my grades and I enjoy going to uni and thank god I'm going to graduate without those ridiculously high fees imposed on me. You know it's going to cost up to £12,000 per year not including living costs (e.g rent, bills, food) to be a student.

So Yes, They may not hate us, but they're sure as hell not being the most understanding people in the world.

Cuz suddenly, cutting education and health is the first place you you start. Twats.

I am a student. That's why I'm posting in here, I guess. Currently at college, studying HND IT & System Support. Planning to go straight into the 3rd year of university next year.

...and I agree with all those fellow UK students who say the government doesn't care too much about us

Wha...? Excuse meee??!! A piece of paper? Man, is that why you went into university? Because you don't want to be seen as a dropout...? Seriously, I like to think people who choose to go to university is because they really want to acquire a specific knowledge in a specific field they can get nowhere else. Like people who have the dream of having a job they can only get by having a uni degree. It's about ambition and determination. And for God's sake, it's not just a piece of paper.

Depends on who earns it and for what reason:

1.For wealthy kids who are "backstabed" into these, just a paper.

2.For hard working and real learning kids, it has a much bigger meaning.

3.For those who try to show off with anything and everything, it's a highly regarded "prize".

4. For those who already work, and just need the degree for that job, it's just a "requirement".

I'm in the 4'th category, I worked in that domain, in that level of degree required, but the law said I need to have that diploma, so it (the Uni) was paid by my employer, just to be able to keep me.

Btw, in my country, if you don't have a University degree, you can't run any kind of Company, even if you got the money to open one or you already own one. You are forced by law to put someone with one form of University studies degree, regardless of wich, in your companies charge.
