Oh, I remember reading an article about that. They were poisonous enough to kill people susceptible to it, but not sure if they shot out acid . . . I'll do a quick search and find you the article, it may have even been on this forum. I'll do an edit and add it in a few minutes.

The bugs in Japan do terrify me, I've seen photos comparing them in size to people's hands or insects here . . . they seem huge! Not good for an insectophobe XD

Asian giant hornet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - and those are what you mean, I think. They're hornets, not wasps, but they are poisonous to a select few who are allergic to them, but - again - don't shoot acid, lol.

Yup, thats the one. Sounds like a helicopter going over your head! I used to think Pokemon were really imaginitive creatures but all Satoshi Tajiri did was look out of his window!

It's true that there are a lot of people who work on limited information and expectations, but that's not enough to debunk the people who've had a prior fascination to the place pre-anime explosion days. I read 'Shogun' by James Clavell when I was nine. That book sparked an interest that has grown into something more. Admittedly it was not enough to get me learning the language, but I'm correcting that particular oversight. Are there any other potential pitfalls I could be warned of? Given the amount of experience represented collectively on these forums, I feel I best ask here...

oh man i just watched that video where it got into the luggage. that thing is huge! i don't mind bugs but if i found one of those guys chillin somewhere i would wig out.

I have to ask, as you've been in Japan, but how common are those kinds of insects? Are they more common in rural areas than in cities? If I was in Tokyo, for example, could I easily avoid them?

Also with the gigantic, radioactive mutant sizes of them . . . how do you kill them or get them out of your house/apartment?

I tried to beat them with a shoe or a slipper but they're far too fast. They move like the face hugger spiders from Alien. My host brother chased them with bug spray. But I don't know if it works because they always came back. I stayed in sub-urban area so I can't comment on how often you'll see them.

Thats what I was thinking of. I always think of wasps and hornets as the same thing, but I guess that would be like doing the same for wasps and bees. lol

There are no real pitfalls if you use your rational judgement and understand that Japanese people are humans and Japanese society is just another variation of that same humanity (both good and bad aspects of it).

BTW... Shogun any good? What's it about?
