Sure, there have been many foreigners that live full time (or near full time) as successful K-1 fighters and sumo wrestlers. In fact, you have a much better chance at finding permanent resident status this way than being a mangaka. The reason is, a mangaka doesn't have to live in Japan to do his or her work.
interesting. thanks for explaining

and i didn't mean to sound harsh at all; i wasn't trying to imply that furthering one's training was a foolish endeauvour or anything like that. my apologies to godwine or anyone else that might be upset by what i said.

Ok guys let's get this straight now, because I find this thread to be complete garbage.. Sorry for being so harsh!

If you went to Japan because of the Anime/Manga or J-PoP or even Martial Arts, just to train in a Japanese Dojo and you like it that much, that you do not won't to miss the thing in your life anymore.. then feel free and do what you think is right for you. There are no "rules" here anymore!

If you went to Japan and you think you can't be without the country anymore, then hell.. do everything in your Power to make your life more worthwhile. You just need the guts to do it no matter what the reasons are.

This is the 21st century, if you feel like that this should be your home then do everything in your Power to fulfil that dream! And there is nobody who can tell you that your reasons "whatever" they might be.. make no sense at all..

It's your life, do what you want with it!

Training as a mangaka is still going with a purpose. When I made the reference of manga and anime, I wasn't talking about people going there for a training, I was referring to people who want to go to Japan because they were attracted by the material presented in the media

Realism, I don't understand your post at all, we are talking about people who want to go to Japan for the wrong reason, what does a local Japanese otaku has anything to do with this? He doesn't need to go to Japan????? And someone already cover this somewhat, the example of a Japanese who want to go to the state after watching die hard, it's just the same.....

And that was my point right above.

If a girl/boy finds Manga or Anime or both sooooo incredible interesting and exciting (it goes for everything, like Martial Arts, Food.. and so on, that he/she goes to Japan for it and after he/she took a step on the Japanese Islands, then decides that this is what she/he wants in her/his life, then he/she needs only the courage and the willpower to make this his/her new home and life. Even if it was right from the beginning only about Manga/Anime or Martial Arts.

This might not be acceptable for you at all, but for him/her it was.

Well there is no wrong reason to go to Japan. If he wants to go so he can buy all the Japanese Adult Videos or go meet AKB48 or whatever...then that's great.

I don't understand how anime is the wrong reason. Isn't anime made by native Japanese people for other native Japanese people?? It's a Japanese product that a lot of people love.

If a Japanese guy wants to come to US so he can read Superman/Batman comic books....I'd tell him that's awesome.

My only suggestion is to be fluent in Japanese if you're gonna live there for a long time. Read all the manga you want.

We are not talking about GOING to Japan, but moving there all together.... There is a difference. The rest of us sane people are suggesting that, MOVING and RELOCATING is a big decision, and it shouldn't be base on something so trivial

I used Manga and Anime as an example because that is one of the main reason why kids become attracted. And they are not attracted by the artwork or the skills behind Manga and Anime, but the content of it, the story itself, the stuff that was drawn in it.

People have to be able to live, and living in a foreign place/region/country is not as simple as you think it is. You said you are Chinese yourself, so you didn't JUST appear in America, someone, either yourself, your parents, grandparents had to move to America. I am sure it was for far better reason than just Batman and Superman

All that we ask is that, MOVE to Japan if you want, but MOVE because of the right reason and because you have done enough research that it is the place you want to be. Our comments are directed towards the group that had absolutely no exposure to Japan except for its Pop-media, this apply to all country, not just Japan...

Surely, it depends on circumstances too. Like somebody in my position, living with parent(s), in further education etc. is easier than somebody working in a company for 5-10 years, own or rented house, their own family (wife/husband/children etc), own car etc.

I'm not saying for one second that the first person will have it easy. It will be extremely difficult, but easier than somebody with real 'ties' in their original country.

Yes of course, but it still won't make a lot of sense to us sensible adult for someone like you to go if in their mind, the world there is exactly as portrayed as in pop-media. The debate is not whether its easy or not, its the reason for going.....

We are merely pointing out what WE think as not being the right reason
