I new to this forum and finding this very interesting.
I want to discuss over the Spouse visa for immigration purpose in Japan. Before that I want to explain my case first. Actually, I am going to marry a Japanese guy who is E visa holder and working in India. We are planning to get marry in month of January. His work permit is up till Feb only and after that both of us will be moving to Japan. As per the Indian Marriage act, I need to register my marriage in court which requires couple of month and after acquiring the certificate duly signed by the registrars; I need to apply for spouse visa. Here my problem comes; I don’t know the process whether and how will the things moves on. What are the documents and court or embassy etc.. Whether I need to hire the lawyer for this or I can do it myself. Most importantly, the lead time require for the process. If it requires 5~6 months then I m out because here in India it will require 2~3 months for registration and all. Can anyone help me over this? I appreciate a single small effort. Thanks!! |

That’s easy. You can just come to Japan with your husband with a tourist visa and file your marriage paper here in Japan, then change your visa to spouse visa. You may have to submit your marriage certificate and other documents so prepare them in advance. I have an Indonesia friend who did exactly the same. It seems you can also apply for a spouse visa in Japanese Embassy in India, through I don’t know the details. Good lack

9:30 AM - Go to register the marriage. Told I need a Foreigner Registration card (didn`t have one as I was on a tourist visa). 10:30 AM - Run around getting the necessary photos. 12:30 PM - Finish registration, and receive the "Processing" paper. 13:00 PM - Register the marriage. 14:30 PM - Apply for a spouse visa. (We`d asked father-in-law for the letter of sponsorship beforehand) A week later, received a postcard telling me the visa was ready. Went the next day to pick it up. Another week or so later, received the actual foreigner card... And had them amend it on the spot to show the new visa information. So... It can be that easy. Will it be for the original poster? I have no idea. |

I think it's worth noting that Japanese marriage certificates are recognized as "official" by the US. The reason that is important is because as far as I know, getting a spousal visa in Japan requires a marriage certificate from your country (as well as a Japanese one). So in the case of an American, the Japanese marriage certificate is recognized by the US as being official, so they technically don't need an American marriage certificate. However, I've heard that for Chinese, even if they've been married in China, Japan doesn't recognize it, so to be officially married in Japan they need to get married once more.
I'm not sure if that will apply to the OP... but I think it very well may. I would look into whether or not a marriage certificate from your country will get you a marriage certificate in Japan. If I understand correctly, you'll be getting married in India, so you'll get some kind of Indian documentation for your marriage. Sometimes they require a translation of such documents. I think you'd be much better off talking to a Japanese embassy in your country or an Indian embassy in Japan. Good luck |
