But once/if I get my package from work, I'm on the first plane there!
Sometimes the grass REALLY IS greener. That's how it was for me - I visited Tokyo/Japan many times as a tourist. Once I actually moved there, it was even better.

Just because a saying is a saying doesn't make it true all the time.

I wasn't there for sightseeing, so I didn't go around to any of the normal tourist bits... So maybe they are more "shiny", but in general Osaka struck me as being, well, grimy.
I now understand what you meant. I used to live in Kita Osaka and its clean there. I only go to South area when I want to go to Namba or Shinsaibashi or work but other than that I am usually in the North area , Hyogo or Kyoto area.

Now that I live in East Side of Osaka, it is a bit grimy. Just this weekend I walked to the supermarket in my slipper , the next thing I know was my feet was full of dust.

To me, living in another major Japanese city, there are few positives I can come up with for Tokyo.
If you are comparing it to a city outside Japan, I have no doubt the feelings about it will be different. It is when you have experience with other cities in Japan that you can start comparing them without the fact that it is Japan (and you are likely thrilled to be in Japan) getting in the way.

I assume maybe Asakusa or Ueno are less clean than Ginza but comparing to other world big cities the mentioned districts are still very clean.
I am not comparing it to other world cities though. I am comparing it to other cities in Japan.

Fact is in Tokyo you have lot of choice.
You have a lot of choice in other major Japanese cities too - along with sophisticated infrastructure... And a lot better organized than the crushing sprawl of Tokyo. The thing is, and part of the point I was trying to make, is that people (particularly tourists) tend to think Tokyo = Japan, when there are other cities that are (in my opinion) nicer places.
People are very willing to overlook negative attributes of Tokyo as just part of "Japan", when in reality, they are "Tokyo" things... Because if you aren't familiar with other cities in the country, you would never know.

But, cleanliness isn't everything.
I agree that it isn't, but it is definitely a plus. Cleanliness isn't the reason I chose to live where I do, but it is something that is quite nice.
But, again, I am comparing cities inside Japan.

What about if I just went there and had 1 or 2 drinks? No-one's properly explained to me what's so bad about Roppongi.

In terms of price or in terms of quality?? For drinks it's your typical Japanese ~$7-8 a beer with cover charge on a lot of places
In terms of reputation..deserved or not it just has a reputation of being where lowlifes (both Japanese and foreigners) go to hit on each other and get together. This reputation isn't just in the minds of foreigners either, a lot of my Japanese friends from Tokyo also have a low opinion of it..those who actually regularly went to Roppongi though claimed it was only a few clubs that were like that.

I dont miss Tokyo all that much but i do miss the friends i made, and the feel of when i discovered something new in the city. Honestly, i was more fond of Kyoto and Osaka. Kyoto had the traditional atmosphere that i admire about the Japanese and is historical center of Japan i loved the feeling of calmness i had when i was there. Osaka just made me feel welcome i had a better vibe while i was visiting and the people seemed friendlier too. Like when i would ask for directions also the night life was more what i like.

I agree with Lonthego. Roppongi is a good place. In the link below you will find some information about Roppongi bars and the opinion of their guests:

Bars, Nightlife/Roppongi - Tokyo Travel Guide Sunnypages.jp

Or in general about nightlife in Tokyo:
Tokyo Nightlife Reviews - Sunnypages.jp

Otherwise it's a good link for restaurants, tours, sightseeing and so on:

It's always funny to be in Roppongi. But it makes really more fun to share this moments with good friends there

Personally, I never did like Roppongi. I was there early in Sunday morning because I have to get to the embassy ( yes it was open that time only ), the streets were so dirty and puke seems to everywhere . Lot's of drunk both foreigner and locals. Garbage seems to be everywhere too. It's like I am back in my city's wet market area
