question - 09-03-2011, 10:04 PM

I have been always told that you have to respect people older than you. But how about you anyone? (I am 29) (maybe this custom is only specific to Japan (and other asian nations)?) There are English words mature and immature. Mature ones are superior to immature ones? And here is an English proverb "The young man knows the rule, but the old man knows the exceptions."

Generally I respect all people for what they do and I respect people for what they are. But not necessarily people that are older than me. Older people don't get any special treatment from me or anything. I'm just polite to everyone.
I was never told to respect people that are older than me. If anything I was only told to be polite to everyone.

Interesting answer. So you treat everyone equally?

One of the most important things anyone studying Japanese can do to make themselves look and sound more proficient in the language is to mimic natives and to have a strong empathy for them as well.

In this regard, if I were to see a peer ぺこぺこing then I would just follow suit. As the old saying goes 郷に入って郷に従え.

If it's someone you know, you would probably be polite. 校長先生 = polite, まったく知らないおっさん = probably polite, unless they are a complete &%$# to you off the bat.

As long as you have a mutual understanding that a certain level of politeness is OK, there shouldn't be a problem. Also, it's not as much about respect as it is "being polite". IMHO.

I was taught from young to respect every single living being regardless of age, sex, colour etc. You will never go wrong.
