Some simple things:
-Food has less fat, but is pretty salty. But no more salty than in the US -Portions are far smaller -Food tend to be less processed than they are in the US (but not always) -People tend to drive less, they usually walk, ride bikes, or take public transportation which involves walking there. These are some of the reasons. The sad truth is that there are people all over the world who have eating disorders due to a degree of things. However this is not the reason Japan as a country is skinny. They are skinny becuase of a diet that has low protein and lots of grains, rice, and fish. EDIT: and to comment on the above posts, It is true many people I have know that have moved to Japan even for a short time lost weight. And vice versa, almost all of the exchange students we get from Japan gain weight while they are in the US. |

McDonalds, Kentucky fried chicken, Wendys, MOS burger, will end that. Even now there are a lot of chubby teenagers there. Now there are a bunch of Tabehodais (all you can eat) popping up all over.

Yeah, but a lot of them do seem to want to be even thinner. My sister says she is always hearing her girl students talk about how fat they are, etc. and how they are on diets. I mean, it's like that in other places too, but they are already so thin...it's weird. And, a lot of jrock/visual kei artists are always feeling the pressure to be thinner, even though they are guys. Any eating disorders for either gender are sad
However, there is a lot of unhealthy food in Japan too, it depends on what you eat on whether you lose weight or not. ALthougth portions are definitely smaller. Although, look at the size of a ramen bowl, hehe. belyvis@ however, even their fast food portions are smaller, for sure. 雅はアメリカに行きます! 빅뱅하고 태군하고 허영생하고 동방신기하고 MBLAQ하고 아웃사이어하고 F.Cuz하고 U-Kiss를사랑해요! Yes the portions are smaller, but the food is still radically different than what they are used to. And this could cause sudden weight gain. Fast food will affect them. Just how much is the question. We will see in 10 to 20 years.
