Cold Comfort for Polar Bears
By JIM CARLTON

Visitors to some of the oil fields that fringe Alaska's Beaufort Sea get this rather disturbing warning before venturing out into the Arctic cold: Look carefully under cars in the parking lot and the buildings on stilts. Why? Lurking there may be one of the world's largest land carnivores -- the polar bear, which can actually track a man down.

But who's to protect polar bears against humans? For the past few years, polar bears off the Alaskan coast were observed drowning many miles out at sea. The suspected culprit: fewer ice floes upon which to hunt their favorite meal -- seals -- because of global warming.

The plight of the polar bear, which became a world-wide clarion call to action on global warming, has brought unrelenting pressure on the Bush administration to do something to try to protect the bears, and this week it did. On Wednesday, Interior Secretary Dick Kempthorne accepted the recommendation of the Fish and Wildlife Service to list the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, affording it some of the same protected status as other endangered wildlife such as desert tortoises.

Have you tried? You aren't dumb, I know that. But to take hair-spray seriously and then say "We can't do anything to help this world, so why waste our time?" is kind of sad to me.

I didn't mean to be insulting, I just was trying to figure out your priorities, because sometimes you sound very liberal and open-minded and sometimes very much the other way.

Ah, if that's how you mean xD
Yes, I am generally open-minded and am most usually always open to the opinion of others, but for certain things I do hold my own beliefs (i.e. rap is ridiculously disgusting; that thing about homosexuality; etc. etc.) ; plenty of which i do not deny, are quite childish ^^"
i am an intelligent individual x]
but by no means a perfect one xD
there are some flaws in my logic at times.
The flaws usually coming from mixing my feelings with logic x.x'''
which usually doesn't work out =.='' (i.e. i'll just take the most comfortable fact and abuse it as the absolute truth w/o giving other possibilities the chance..but then again, don't we all do that?! >.<")
and bleh, that was absurdly incoherent...
but i just woke up 3 in the afternoon =.='''
sooo yeah ^^"

oh and the hairspray thing.....my silly attempt at exaggerating x.x'' ..i don't even use hairspray >.>''''
(wax ftw x])

and, someone's opinion is never insulting, because that's just what they believe
however it's when they force their opinions in an unnecessary manner that it becomes an insult....atleast that's how figure it x]

oh and no, i've never tried xDD
always had this ''impression'' that politics is nothing but a jumble of large, needlessly sophisticated words and contradictory ideas that i would rather not have any bother in >.>'''

We are probably very capable of destroying ourselves. But I wouldn't be so vain as to say that we, as human beings, are capable of destroying all nature or the entire planet.
