Japan, France to promote use of nuclear power
Japan and France have agreed to seek closer economic ties and to promote the use of nuclear energy as a way to fight global warming. Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda met visiting French Prime Minister Francois Fillon in Tokyo on Friday. Statements released after the meeting say they agreed that establishing a nuclear fuel cycle is an essential step for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The 2 countries will provide technical assistance and other forms of support to countries that want to build nuclear power plants. The leaders confirmed that global warming and development aid for African nations will top the agenda of the Group of Eight summit in Japan in July. They also agree on the need for an early conclusion of trade liberalization talks at the World Trade Organization. The 2 countries will seek stronger economic ties through symposiums and promoting joint studies and other personnel exchanges by Japanese and French companies. Mr Fukuda said it was good that he was able to discuss global warming and African aid with the French leader ahead of the summit. 2008/04/11 16:04 NHK WORLD English |
