Dekikon Marriages on the Rise in Japan -
05-21-2007, 02:42 PM
When Morning Musume singer Nozomi Tsuji, 19, announced her marriage earlier this month to actor Taiyo Sugiura, she had some extra news as well - Tsuji was nine weeks pregnant. The last several months have seen a number of Japanese celebrities announcing shotgun weddings, from singers to sports figures.
But it's not just celebrities who enter into shotgun marriages -- called dekichatta kekkon (or dekikon for short) in Japanese, literally meaning "done it marriage." In fact, about a quarter of all married Japanese couples with children have taken their vows while the bride was pregnant. The number has risen sharply in the last few years. In 1980 such marriages accounted for only 12.6 percent of all marriages in Japan. Source: 'Done it' / Dekikon marriages multiply | Japan Times |

Um, what innocence? My students are more interested in my sex life than just about anything else. My favorite question, "Jason, how many girlfriends do you have?" And let's not forget the countless times I meet drunk Japanese men and they start asking me how big, hmm, maybe shouldn't mention that one... Well then, let's not get started on how many times I get, "You should have Japanese girlfriend."
