Sumo Match

I was looking to see a Sumo match while in Japan next year although i wont be in the right cities at the right time to see one of the 6 main tournaments.

I was wondering if there are any matches outside of these tournament dates that I could watch?

Any info/links etc would be greatly appreciated.

You should probably look into the "local tours" that they hold between the main tournaments. They do go to smaller cities. I suggest that you visit their official site as your trip approaches. I looked briefly but as of today, they haven't announced the local tour dates for next year.

Are they as popular in Japan as they are made out to be? Is it mostly a destination for older people or more of a mix?

Sumo is fairly popular among all ages. But it's not easy to be a real paying fan if you work a regular job because all the matches are held in the afternoons before 6 pm. This is why you see many older people at the tournaments. Most younger fans have to watch the replays at night or see only a few matches a day in the news.

If you are spending any time in Tokyo, you can probably visit the sumo "stables" near Kinshichiro. They are walking distance from Asakusa, and they often have training matches.

Make sure to try "chanko-nabe" when you are here. It's what sumo wrestlers are fed every day, and it's very good. The best place to get it is a restaurant called "Chanko Dining".

Awesome Sangetsu. great tips. I will based in Tokyo for at least 7 days so i think I can fit it in!
