Hrm... I went to Japan with members of my doujinshi/anime art club, have cosplayed on occasion and do enjoy anime/manga. I don't consider myself an otaku, but I do think that an anime fan with realistic expectations can go to Japan and have a fantastic time. I don't think it's any less of a legitimate reason for going to Japan than say, going to China because of interest in kung fu (which I've also done ), as long as the person is approaching it in a realistic and intelligent way.
The problem is the number of self-proclaimed otaku, mainly quite young, who know next to nothing about Japan outside of what they've seen in anime and think its some kind of wonderland. |

I've been to Japan, and I'm going to go again next year, but i wasn't led there by a love of anime or manga(although i do love it). My sis is over there teaching so my parents & i went to visit her, and to see lots and lots and lots of temples. Goodness, it made my head spin.
Anyways, I'm more fanatically obsessed about Jrock but i actually became more obsessed with it after i returned from my trip to Japan. Which was really annoying actually, cause i was like "oh i could have bought all these posters and cds but i didn't..." So that partially led me to wanting to go there again, but i also just found it really interesting, and i want to visit more places then just Tokyo and Kyoto. I'm going by myself this time though, so i'm kinda nervous... although my sis will be there part of the time. |
