curfews in hotels and hostels. why? - 01-26-2011, 04:12 AM

I can understand some of the hostels, because when you have multiple people in a room, the atmosphere of people coming in and out at all times can cause problems. especially bunk mates.

but for many hotels, they seem to have the same thing. Seems kind of strange. I did a Google search and forum search and didn't come across any info.

another thing, a lot of business hotels have a reverse curfew, you have to be out by 8 or 9 and cant get back in till 4-5pm!

At the last business hotel I stayed at in Asakusa there were no curfews or leave times, except for final check out at 11:00 AM. I had to leave my key at the front desk whenever I left, but it was staffed 24/7.

Probably so they don't have to pay one or two receptionists to stay up the whole night.

I cannot imagine a hotel that does not have staff available all night, unless you are staying at a bed and breakfast.

I wouldn't really consider myself an expert on this since I had only a limited stay in Japan. But as far as staying in an actual hotel, I have never come across this problem. As said before we just had to give them our room keys when we left the hotel and get them back when we returned to our room.

I've heard of pretty set check-in/check-out times... (although a lot of places I've stayed at have been lenient to say the least), but I've never heard of what you're talking about. I've stayed in many hotels and Onsens in many different prefectures of Japan and I've never encountered this. Maybe this is the exception and not the rule?

The curfew thing is pretty normal in Japan, especially in business hotels. You can usually ask and make arrangements if you have to come back after a certain time, but in general there is a curfew.

After the curfew, there is usually only a single staff member on site - and they are "on call", so will sleep unless there is an actual emergency. The doors will be locked, and you will have to call the hotel (or call the staff member by intercom) to get in.

As for the day out times, it is when they do cleaning. As they will clean in the rooms people are staying in, it is a safety measure to make sure that no one is hanging around to slip in and possibly steal something.

It`s a cheap business hotel thing. You won`t see it in normal hotels, ryokan, or onsen.
