I don't know about smoking age limit...but I will tell you I saw many people (mostly girls) smoking in Jr high uniforms....
As for drinking age in Japan...it's 20, but Westerners tend to look older to the Japanese...cough... |

I really wish that is the case, so that I can breath easily Smoking while walking is basically not illegal. But if you are already on train platform, there is a designated smoking area. Most if not all restaurant and cafe have smoking area, so if you smoke after eating, you can always go the are where smoking is allowed.

Oooh well .. I'm not sure if it's a good thing for a westerner to look "older" but as for the smoking and the concerned person above, I would NEVER disrespect Japan by like smoking in all the american movies and just chucking my ciggerettes over such a beautiful place. Was just curious thank you =D
If everyone loved and nobody lied, If everyone shared and swallowed their pride, Then we'd see the day when nobody died. |

Yeah, in truth, it may be wise to avoid both in a foreign country, especially drinking. One must remember that if they like it or not, while traveling, you are a diplomat of sorts representing your country.
Though, smoking may not be somthing that has a big chance of getting you in trouble...it's just not a good habbit to get into. |
