I think EDO WOnderland in Nikko would be great for you. You can dressed up as Samurai or Shinsengumi outfit.

The nice thing about Iga-Ueno: Ninja Village is that you can dress up as Ninja for just 500yen, and walk around the city in it. There is also a Shuriken Experience, where you can throw shuriken on a dart board for free. Then there is the castle, the Ninja House and Ninja Show. That's about it. There is nothing much to see in the place but I love the part where I dress up as a ninja
There is actually another one in Chiba ?? or in Shiga and my friend told me its better than Iga..

There is another Edo Wonderland in Mie --> Shima Peninsula Travel: Azuchi Momoyama Bunka Mura

Looks like it's in Shiga, sounds similar to the Iga one but closer Kyoto and according to the description it might have more... might suggest going to that one. I'm such a dork for these things =P

I don't know if we'll have time for Nikko The Edo Wonderland looks like fun, but the dressing up is maybe a bit expensive for us.

Maybe it's a cluster of okonomiyaki restaurants? If so I'm definitely going there

Change of plans with the flight means we're now flying to Osaka, working our way up to Tokyo then flying out from there. Means we can cluster our more expensive trips in a shorter period of time and get a 7 day JR pass, which seems to be the best option for us, I think.

If you're interested in design and stuff then you can definetly spend 5 days in Tokyo no problems.

I think you could do Kyoto in one day yaknow...like I studied a bit of buddhst art and like temples and stuff but a day tops is all I can take of Kyoto, it's alot of walking and it's like 'oh great another temple'. Its not that big a city.

Osaka there's well, umeda, namba, america muru, the aquarium, eating, eating, eating...lol. Try and bump into some osaka people on the street and go drinking. Ummm there must be more to do lol. Oh and ferris wheels.

I've been to Mt Koya too, and really liked it, I spent a day there then overnighted in a temple inn. There's a really cool river for aborted/still born babies.

Nara, good for a day trip. See a few temples, feed the deer, have lunch/dinner come home.

very informative thread.....great read!

i've just got a couple of questions that im not really sure of

im staying in tokyo for 7 nights and was wondering if the JR rail pass would be worth it. obviously i would purchase the 7 day pass.

im planning on going on day trips to nagano on one day and to osaka on another. plus using the JR pass to travel around tokyo. but i've heard that the JR pass is only valid on the JR line and the JR yamonote line, is that correct?

cheers in advance

By the bullet train (I'm assuming you're not going for the cheaper but longer bus rides since you're only there for 7 nights) it'll cost over $100 each way to Osaka and back, and I think it's close to that as well to get to places around Nagano. Not sure about your exchange rate, but for me the 7 day pass was $320 which makes it definitely worth it just for those trips. Just remember you'll have to bring some extra cash for travelling off the JR lines and you should be all good

Osaka "for the day" from Tokyo will consist of 6+ hours on the bullet train (I don't think you can use the rail pass to ride the fastest shinkansen) plus travel from the Shin-Osaka to whereever you want to go and back.

If you are only going to be there for 7 days, I might stick closer to Tokyo, like Yokohama...
