Shin Tokyo Tower - 05-02-2008, 10:17 AM

New Tokyo Tower - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://www.rising-east.jp/

Apparently, in 3 years Tokyo will have a new Tokyo Tower.
It will stand in the area near Oshiage eki, and will be the tallest structure in the world (610.58m/2003ft tall, that's around twice the "old" tokyo tower's height!)

The official name hasn't still be decided.
In march 2008, Tokyo citizens took part in a public poll and choose six possibile names. The possible names are:
Tokyo Edo Tower 東京EDOタワー
Tokyo Sky Tree 東京スカイツリー
Mirai Tree みらいタワー
Yume Miyagura ゆめみやぐら
Rising East Tower ライジングイーストタワー
Rising Tower ライジングタワー
check this out 2008.4.1 for an explanation on the meaning of every possibile name.

What do you think about it?
I love architecture and extremely tall buildings! I can't wait to climb it.
But the names... they're terrible. I personally would choose Yume Miyagura, but, according to rumors, the official name will be Rising East Tower.
Which name would you choose?

Looks cool, I do like the idea of tall buildings, all over the world, but then again, there are a lot of negatives to tall buildings... Anyway, it still looks nice.

btw, it won't be the tallest building in the world, it'll be the tallest in Japan only! I believe the Burj Tower will be completed before

That's true. Burj Dubai will be completed in 2009, two years before the new Tokyo Tower.

By the way, Burj Dubai will be the sexiest building ever ever ever made.

Hmm... pretty impressive and much more good looking than the old Tokyo tower... i wonder if they are going to leave the old tower as it is, or take it down? What's the point of having 2 of them? X)

From what it says here, this Burj Dubai building will exceed the New Tokyo Tower's height by about 200m

If that happens, then the new Tokyo Tower won't be the tallest building. They'd have to expand on it even more then they already are.

But regardless, it is still a very impressive structure.

(I've always wondered why Tokyo Tower is modeled after the Eiffel Tower).

@ Ex-san : From what I know about Tokyo Tower, it is currently in Shiba Park in Minato, Tokyo. This new one is in a totally different area, so my guess is that they will either take the old one down, use it's parts to make the new one, or leave it as a landmark. Hmm....

the Tokyo Tower is the symbol of Japan as the country that has suffered a lot of problems during the war and in 15 years has become one of the strongest countries in the world (economically speaking). It's a symbol that can't be taken down.
Plus, both towers will be used for broadcasting, and both will have a lot of visitors.
I find it very nice to see from high above a city like Tokyo, chaotic but beautiful. High buildings give the opportunity to see the town from different points of view: there's Tokyo tower near Roppongi, the Tokyo Metropolitan Governement Office in Shinjuku, Sunshine City in Ikebukuro, and now this new Tokyo Tower near Asakusa.

The sakura really compliment the tower in that artist's rendition.

Also, here's a picture of the site it's being constructed at. It doesn't look very nice.
