Japanese ? Art, Date and origin unknown -
08-10-2010, 11:00 AM
Who would be so kind and help me with this ink drawing,
I believe it could be Japanese, ??? Maybe some of you are able to read the text and help me with the date, artist ? and origin, maybe it's worth! http://a.imageshack.us/img201/773/1japanlapa1.jpg this is the hardest part to read, it is so faint that I am not sure if it is written on the front or on the back! http://a.imageshack.us/img820/8375/0000027.jpg so I added two versions 1 frontal http://a.imageshack.us/img716/7286/1...apa2frontb.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img833/5517/1japanlapa2f.jpg 2 reverse adjustment! http://a.imageshack.us/img826/9732/1...pa2reverse.jpg the next text field is easier, but every Japanese person I was able to show it wasn't able to read it! http://a.imageshack.us/img821/3222/1japanlapa4.jpg Thank you for your help! This faint sig, there may be two characters (if any, as it is a strange place to write anything). Perhaps someone has a software for pic. editing to extract it. The other text is a sig (1st row of two characters on the left, first kanji on the top means 書, in this case "written by") and i believe a name of the pic. Although I am not 100% sure what's written. The first char. of the name could be 不 but there really should not be that first descending stroke, running from right to left. Then again it's a sig. nearly anything goes. Second seems like 身 and third char. of that name is 者. I reckon the title reads 音上昇 , strengthening noise, raising noise. 上 in cursive form looks very much like 二 |

ehh.... i give you an example of my own work sig. on the left: 龍涙書 (りゅうるいしょ) Basically there are two main methods of signing calligraphy or sumie. 書 after a 雅号印 meaning you have wrote it, and 臨 as in 臨書 when you were writing it but copying from old manuscripts (古典) The 書 I am referring to is on the left side not the ride side text in bold. doubt its a 書二号 as: 1. it is not a document 2. explanatory notes are rarely made in 草書 (unless made to self) 3. 口 in 号 or any other kanji is not written that way in 草書. 日 on the other hand is. 4. First character is definitely not 書. I would not be surprised that 二 is in fact 上. As I said 上's old form particularly in 甲骨文 but not exclusively was written as a pictograph of one object above another, thus meaning "above" and it looks like 二. It is possible that author (if the text on the left hand side is the title of this work) is mixing 草書 with variation of 甲骨文. |

I want to sincerely thank both of you,
for helping me out with this! I hated to do this, but to get to the bottom of it ..I had to remove it from the frame! (The paper is thinner than Tissue Paper, extremely delicate) this is the best I can do! Sorry http://a.imageshack.us/img688/935/1signoframe2.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img837/231/1signoframe.jpg The picture has been with my family since 1945, and was given to us by the Adjutant to General "Pasckiewiez-c"? Polish General? who must have had about 50 of them! (it could have been a series)?! The date written on the back is 1680, but I don't believe (am not sure) if that person knew what he/she was talking about!!!??? Thank you again for your kind help!!! Frank |

Name probably is Paskiewicz (I am Polish as well ;-p), although I don't know the chap. Frank, could you please make a pic in higher resolution? Top left looks like 石, but it's really pale and small. The paper is thin as it is calligraphy paper. And since it is old it must be really fragile. |

This morning I remembered that sometimes UV light
will help to show faint areas! The first picture shows that two waves from the painting are crossing the lower character! http://a.imageshack.us/img594/9035/0000039.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img834/9317/1siguv2.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img836/9019/1siguv.jpg |

When I look at this picture,
it looks like that the upper right Character has a circle which is only visible because the "Stylus???" scratched the paper! http://a.imageshack.us/img705/6889/1signf1.jpg Maybe I am seeing things! Stylus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Too bad, that nobody is able to read it! |
