"Visuel Kei" has actually been around forever, and is not just derived from Gothic Lolita and Victorian styles. VK is basically just people dressing up in unusual styles and performing something musical, is it not? If you think about it that way, then the first sentence of this paragraph is true. Gothic Lolita is a big part of it though. Emo is just a type of VK, but a westernized version, in my opinion. But normally, when people think of Visual Kei, they think of X Japan, Gazette, Versailles, whatever your favorite J-rock groups are, it doesn't matter. That means Kiss is technically "VK," right? And so is Viking metal. I see it as a perspective kind of thing.
I know you hate me. but this needed to be corrected.

Visual Kei just means "Visual Style"

So technically. Kiss IS VK.

VK just copied everything that Glam Rock/Metal was in the 80s.

and man. I've seen so many VK artists try to be Manson.

VK is just Glam. Japan's always been 20 years behind when it comes to popular music, so that explains a lot.

and VK and Jrock is practically the same. most of the jrockers dress VK anyway.

Oh God.. We As An Individual Need To Give Those 'Emo' Kids a Break! Sorry To Classified Them As 'Emo'. And How Can Someone or Some Group of People Truly Ruin Something? To You Perhaps Visual Kei Is Ruined In Their Hands But To Them They Have Created Something New And They Love It.
And Like Someone Said Early, If You Can't Handal The Heat, Get Out of The Kitchen; Stop Wearing Visual Kei. =)

Yes. And wear some proper style.

Arikado: Fair point there.

Make It a Privilege To Being Able To Wear Visual Kei In Public Might Just Do The Trick.

I always wondered why a glam rock band sung a song about Christmas...

I don't really hate you, I just think you're quite the rude little fellow at times ;]

Anyway, you're absolutely right. Kiss and other groups like it are visual kei. Modern VK is derived from glam rock/metal of the 80's as you also mentioned (although I disagree with Japan being 20 years behind in the music industry). And yeah, there is little differentiation between VK and J-rock these days just because almost every J-rocker dresses in some sort of VK style.

We aren't really classifying them as 'emo,' they chose that identification themselves. But yeah, if you can't handle the occasional ignorant insult, just don't dress that way.

The problem that happens, is mostly from outsiders that are viewing the people ... they give them the tag that is most commonly known at the time ... (which can vary depending on where you live) ...

now, someone that is actually into a certain style, may better recognize others in the same style ... but they can and will often still make mistakes when commenting on how someone else dresses ...

Where i live, there are very few 'emo' people ... and most people that dress in that style are still referred to as 'gothic' ... but that is changing, and now they are being referred to as 'vampire wanna-be' thanks to a certain book series and movie ...

eh, either way, just dress how you want .. and to hell with what others think about it.

oh right. yeah. i guess blunt could be seen as "rude" sometimes. -shrug-

Japan IS a little behind in music, 20 years was just my way of saying they're really behind. but its not always a bad thing. ever heard B.A.A.L? an industrial band in Japan. they're so freaking good, they're still doing real industrial with crunchy guitars and things like that. things like western industrial bands dont really do anymore. industrial nowadays is just shitty synths and drums, whilst a decade or so ago, it was much louder, a little more incorporated into metal, like B.A.A.L's music.

and yeah. i agree. if you can't handle the insults, just don't dress VK.
and besides. idk how people who dress like that say its "unique"
nothing is really unique anymore, cause if you dressed VK, more than likely all your friends do also, so that doesn't really make you unique or an individual, does it?
and if you dress "Goth" or whatever, more than likely your friends will dress that way too.
its just a different kind of conformity.
