my friend is trying make me one but she needs a picture. i want one that only goes to your knees, but has the long sleeves, any suggestions?

you could simply make a normal long sleved (furisode btw)kimono and cut it off at the knees

depends on what you can get hold of - either Butterick or McCall

just go to a local fabric store, they should beable to help

well within reason I have seen them made from many different fabrics, depends on how traditional you would want it to be I suppose...

Kimono is made of cotton, hemp, wool, or silk.

Silk brocade with weaved-in swastika patterns is very classical, but expensive and hard to find outside Japan.

Light cotton is used in making yukata (summer kimono).

Cotton, hemp and wool is used for normal kimono.

Don't use artificial fabrics such as fortrel or polyester. It's cheap and it shows.

Looking at the kimono displayed in this thread you can see that the art is either painted on with dyes or embroidered by hand.

A safe bet would be to look for natural soft colored fabric with subdued pattern, or gradient colored.

Pattern of long stripes would be good if the collar is a solid dark color.

just see what the fabric shop has.

embroided material tends to cost a lot though

i wanna make myself a cyber-goth type furisode now

will be cool if i can get one done for the expo in the summer

okay, thanks, that was really good advice.
see i can only make pajama pants and regular american style dresses.
oh and regular pants. but thats pretty much the same.
