Shampoo advertising in Japan has almost always featured glamorous foreign blondes praising imports from Procter & Gamble and Unilever.
But ads for Tsubaki Shampoo, the latest hit from Japanese cosmetics company Shiseido, feature famous Japanese women and an unusually direct slogan: "Japanese women are beautiful." The message has struck a chord at a time when Japanese women are increasingly looking to role models in their own ranks, rather than stars from abroad, for definitions of their self worth. You know, almost all the recent shampoo commercials I can think of off the top of my head don`t feature blondes. In fact, I can`t think of a single commercial with a blonde. Even the most "European Image" Mod`s Hair uses a brunette.....
All the others used older women (Showing them having fuller hair) or mothers (washing their hair with their kids). Tsubaki is just the very latest of the "Japanese image" shampoos. Before it there was that one that used breast milk essence, and then that Asience one... |
